Download PDF: Hajj on Belhalf of parents
It is reported that once a female from the Bani Jahiniyah approached Sayyiduna Rasoolullah May Allah send peace and blessings upon him and asked, “O Prophet of Allah! My mother once made the intention to perform Hajj but she passed away before completing this. Can I perform Hajj on her behalf?”
Sayyiduna Rasoolullah May Allah send peace and blessings upon him replied, “Yes, you may perform Hajj on her behalf. What is your impression, if your mother had debts, would you have repaid them or not? In like manner, fulfil your debts to Allah Almighty because He is more entitled that His Rights be fulfilled.” (Bukhari Shareef)
Lesson
There is no doubt that the greatest favours owed by man to any other creation are his parents. One of the requirements of this favour is that they should not be troubled either in this world or the next. One of the ways of serving them and doing favours for them in the Hereafter is that one should complete whatever outstanding religious duties they had not completed in this word. These would include such acts as Salaah, Hajj, fasting etc. If they never had the opportunity of completing their Hajj or Umrah, one should also complete it on their behalf. This is one of the ways of serving ones parents. However, when we look at the present age, we will see that this service and concern for one’s parents only remains until this world and not beyond. When parents are buried, most children forget about them and become involved in their own wordily activities.
However, the pious Muslims of the past did not behave in this manner. They understood all the difficult times which their parents had to face while they were brought up. This is the reason that even in this world, they continued to worry and concern themselves with the well-being of their parents in the Hereafter. The reason for the question of this blessed companion was based upon this concern.
We will present a few Ahadith in this regard:
- Sayyiduna Rasoolullah May Allah send peace and blessings upon him has stated that, “After their parents, if someone performs Hajj on their behalf, Allah Almighty will record freedom for this person from Hell and He will bestow complete reward on both of them and there will be no decrease in this.” (Baihaqi Shareef)
- Sayyiduna Rasoolullah May Allah send peace and blessings upon him has stated that, “He who performs the Hajj on behalf of his parents, his Hajj will also be accepted and he will receive reward for another ten Hajj.” (Daar-e-Qutni)
- Sayyiduna Rasoolullah May Allah send peace and blessings upon himhas stated that, “When a person performs Hajj on behalf of his parents, his Hajj and their Hajj is accepted and their souls are also joyous in the heavens.”
