Mohammad is the Messenger of Allah and those with him are hard against the infidels and tender among themselves you will see them bowing and prostrating themselves in prayer seeking grace of Allah and His pleasure.  Their mark is on their faces from the traces of prostrations.  This description of theirs is in Taurah and their description is in Enjeel.  As a cultivated field which puts forth its sprout, then strengthened it, then it became thick, then stood straight upon its stem, it looks pleasant to the cultivators that through them the hearts of the infidels may burn.  Allah has promised unto those of them who are believers and do good, forgiveness and a great reward.

(Al-Fat’h 48, Verse 29)

Mufassiroon (scholars who specialize in the faculty of explaining the intricate meaning of Quranic verses, also known as exegesis) say that the phrase “رُحَمَآءُ بَیۡنَہُمْ” (tender among themselves) refers to Sayyiduna ‘Uthman al-Ghani – may Allah be pleased with him.  Although all the Sahaba were kind towards one another but Sayyiduna ‘Uthman particularly excelled in this quality of his.

He was born 6 years after the event of the people of the elephant.

His name was ‘Uthman and his nicknames were Abu ‘Umar, Abu ‘Abdillah and Abu Ya’la.

He embraced Islam in the beginning and was amongst those who entered the folds of Islam upon the invite of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddeeq – may Allah be pleased with him.   He was the fourth person to embrace Islam.

Calamities that had Befallen Him due to Accepting Islam:

It is mentioned in Tareekh al-Kulafa that Hakam ibn Abi al-‘Aas, the uncle of Sayyiduna ‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him – captured him in a room after hearing the news that he had embraced Islam.   He said to him, “You have forsaken the religion of your forefathers and have adopted a new religion!  How dare you!  I will not release you from here until you abandon this new religion.  I will keep you imprisoned like this for as long as it takes.”

Hearing this Sayyiduna ‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him – said: “Uncle!  I swear by Allah that I will never abandon the religion of Islam and will never exchange this treasure (of Iman) for anything.”

When the uncle realized how strong his Iman was, he eventually gave up on him and set him free.

His Title Dhu al-Noorain (One who is blessed with TWO NOOR’S):

Imam Suyooti writes in Tareekh al-Khulafa with reference to Ibn ‘Asakir that when someone asked Sayyiduna ‘Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – about it, he said, “Sayyiduna ‘Uthman is such a personality who is famous among the upper angelic domain by the name of “Dhu al-Noorain”, for he has two daughters of the beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – in his Nikah.

Sayyiduna ‘Uthman will intercede for and Enter 70 thousand otherwise Doomed Individuals into Paradise Without Accountability:

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – has stated:

Due to the intercession of ‘Uthman, 70 thousand such people will enter Paradise who were deserving of hell, and that too without accountability.

(Ibn ‘Asakir in the narration of Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them)

10 Virtues of Sayyiduna ‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him:

A person visited Sayyiduna ‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him – while he was surrounded by enemies in a life-threatening house-arrest.  He then told that person that his 10 virtues are recorded by Allah Almighty:

  1. I am the fourth person to embrace Islam
  2. The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – gave two of his daughters in my Nikah one after the other.
  3. I never partook in singing and dancing.
  4. I never indulged in foul play.
  5. I never intended to commit any evil or vices.
  6. After I placed my right hand in the hand of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – while pledging allegiance, I never touched my privates parts with it.
  7. I freed one slave after every Jumu’ah Salah, and at the times when I could not do so, I manage to fulfil it later on.
  8. I never committed adultery neither before nor after Islam.
  9. I never stole anything whether before or after Islam.
  10. I compiled the Holy Quran in the same order as it was in the time of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him.

(Tareekh al-Khulafa)

Sayyiduna ‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him – Helps others in Poverty:

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – narrates:

Once there was a severe drought in Madina Shareef and there was terrible hunger and poverty. At that moment also, a caravan belonging to Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani – may Allah be pleased with him – was also returning from Syria and it was loaded with grain.  When this caravan arrived in Madina Shareef, the merchants then approached Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani – may Allah be pleased with him – so that they could purchase this grain.  He then asked them what profit they were willing to give him.  They replied that for every ten Dirhams he had spent, they would give him two Dirhams as profit.  However, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani – may Allah be pleased with him –mentioned that he wanted more than this.

They then told that for every ten Dirhams he had spent, they would give him four Dirhams as profit.  Still, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani – may Allah be pleased with him – insisted that they give him more than this.  They said that they were the sole traders in Madina Shareef and certainly no one else would give him more than this.  The blessed companion then mentioned, “Allah Almighty will give me ten Dirhams in return for every single Dirham I have spent. Therefore, bear witness that I have distributed this among the poor of Madina Shareef.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – then continues, “I then saw the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – in a dream and mentioned that I was waiting to see him.  He told me, ‘O ibn Abbas! The charity which has been given by ‘Uthman has indeed been accepted in the Divine Court of Allah. He had also been married to a Jannati maiden and I also one of the guests.’  It is also mentioned that the Holy Prophet – peace be upon him – was seen riding a horse with wings and his shawl was one of complete Nur.

He Would Deprive Himself but Gave Others Whole-Heartedly:

One man came to the court of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – and asked for financial assistance for his daughter’s wedding.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – told him to go to Sayyiduna ‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him and convey my Salam and mention your needs.  He will fulfil it.”

He went to the house of Sayyiduna ‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him – but as he set his feet on the doorstep, he heard some noises.   Sayyiduna ‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him – was fighting with his wife over burning extra oil in the lamp.  When he witnessed this, he thought to himself, if this man makes a noise about a little extra oil burning in the lamp, of what help could he be to him?

However, he had just thought of returning from there but then thought to at least convey the Salah of RasoolAllah – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him.

He went ahead and conveyed the Salam.  Sayyiduna ‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him – was overjoyed and told him to not hesitate if he ever needed any help.

He mustered up the courage to reveal his needs to him whereupon Sayyiduna ‘Uthman took him to his safe and told him to help himself with whatever he wanted from it.

The man was now highly confused and couldn’t help but ask, “I was just wondering when I saw you fighting with your wife over a little extra oil in the lamp and thought why would you want to help me?!”

Hearing this Sayyiduna ‘Uthman replied, “As far as the extra oil for the lamp is concerned, it was for my personal expenditure, therefore I felt bad when extra had been burnt but when it came to spending in the path of Allah, then ‘Uthman opens up his treasure chest.”

Punishment for a Tormentor of Hadrat ‘Uthman

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Qulaabah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates:

I once arrived in Syria with some of my companions.  While we were in one of the areas of Syria, we heard someone screaming, “I am destroyed, the Fire, the Fire.”

I then approached this person and noticed that both his hands and feet were cut off, he was blind, and his mouth was also dragging on the ground.  I was shocked and asked him what had happened to him.  He replied, “I am that unfortunate person who had become involved in the fitnah against Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani – may Allah be pleased with him.  I was also among those tyrants who forcefully entered the blessed house of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani – may Allah be pleased with him. When we approached Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani – may Allah be pleased with him, his wife began to scream, and shout and I decided to slap her.  When I did this, she cursed me and said, ‘Allah will remove your hands and feet, He will take away your vision and you will be thrown into the Fire.’ When I heard this curse, I ran from that house but could not run from what was destined to happen to me.  Now you can see my state, my hands and feet have been cut, I am also blind and very soon, I will be thrown into the Fire.’

When I heard his story, I said to him, “There is no doubt that you are someone who is completely entitled for what you have experienced and there is no doubt that the Fire of Hell is certainly waiting for you.”

This is when the mutineers had surrounded the blessed house of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani – may Allah be pleased with him – and finally had him martyred.  It is mentioned that they had also made sure that no food or water reaches him.

However, all tyrants must remember that tyranny is something which always has a repayment.  This is the nature of tyranny.  Even though at this moment in time a person might think that he is extremely powerful and influential, he will never be able to escape from what will be coming for him.  The Qur’an and the Hadith Shareef clearly proves to us that in the end, the oppressor is never successful.  Not only does he go through immense punishment in this world in the end, but the terrible punishment of the Hereafter still awaits him.
