Mohammad is the Messenger of Allah and those with him are hard against the infidels and tender among themselves you will see them bowing and prostrating themselves in prayer seeking grace of Allah and His pleasure.  Their mark is on their faces from the traces of prostrations.  This description of theirs is in the Taurah and their description is in Enjeel.  As a cultivated field which puts forth its sprout, then strengthened it, then it became thick, then stood straight upon its stem, it looks pleasant to the cultivators that through them the hearts of the infidels may burn.  Allah has promised unto those of them who are believers and do good, forgiveness and a great reward.

(Al-Fat’h 48, Verse 29)

The Mufassiroon have determined that the phrase “اَشِدَّآءُ عَلَی الْکُفَّارِ” (hard against the infidels) identifies and personifies Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him.

Imam Dhahabi – may Allah be pleased with him – says that Sayyiduna ‘Umar -may Allah be pleased with him – embraced Islam in the sixth year of Islam.  He was 27 years of age at the time.

He embraced Islam after 39 males and 23 females had embraced Islam.

Hadeeth: (Du’a for Either ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab or ‘Amr ibn Hisham)

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – made Du’a to Allah:

O Allah, whoever between ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab and ‘Amr ibn Hisham is dearer to you, strengthen Islam through them.

(Tirmidhi)

Hadrat ‘Umar accepts Islam

Sayyidah Fatimah binte Khattab – may Allah be pleased with her – is the sister of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him.  She and her husband, Hadrat Sayyiduna Saeed bin Zayd – may Allah be pleased with him, were very early Muslims.  Due to their fear of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him, who at that time was a staunch enemy of Islam, they kept their conversion to Islam very silent.

When Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – heard about their conversion to Islam, he was extremely furious.  He went to their house in this state of fury.  When he reached the front door, he could hear someone reading the Holy Qur’an. As he knocked on the door and announced who was at the front door, everyone in the house stopped what they were doing.

When his sister opened the door, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him –shouted out, “O enemy of your life! Have you accepted Islam?”

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – attacked his brother-in-law and severely beat him as well.  When his sister tried to save her husband, she was also slapped so viciously that her blessed face also began to bleed.  His sister, who was after all the sister of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then stood bravely in front of him and declared, “O ‘Umar! You may do whatever you wish, but we will never turn me away from Islam.”

When Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – heard these words and also saw the blood streaming from the face of his blessed sister, he became a little calmer and then declared, “Bring what you have been reading in front of me.”

When Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – saw these pages and saw a few words from Surah Hadeed, it was like his entire world had changed.  When he came to the verse, “bring faith in Allah and His Prophet” he could not control himself and he suddenly began to weep.  His body also began to tremble.  He read the Kalimah.

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then got up and walked briskly to the house of Hadrat Sayyiduna Zaid bin Arqam – may Allah be pleased with him – and again proclaimed the Kalimah in the blessed presence of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.  He then took all the Muslims to the Ka’ba and publicly announced that he had accepted Islam. (Usaabah, 8/161)

If a person remains firm on his or her belief, then through the Divine Grace of Allah Almighty, they are blessed with steadfastness in Imaan.  There is no doubt that the person who opposes such a person, one day, they will also become soft in front of this person.

When a person opposes truth, he does so because of the evil whisperings of the Satan.  However, when he sees that the person is firm and steadfast and is not prepared to abandon their Islamic beliefs, then he realises that there is no way in which he can mislead this person; then eventually, he leaves the person.

Those females who experience such hardship in their homes when certain members of their family are not acting according to Islam should learn a lesson from this incident. They should not become discouraged and continue to propagate the truth and the message of Islam.

As the blessed sister of the Muslims, Sayyidah Fatimah binte Khattab – may Allah be pleased with her, displayed courage which eventually makes those who oppose you when you are continuing to spread the message of Islam; eventually to accept your message.  What is needed from our Muslim sisters is firmness and the conviction of Islam.

At the same time, when we see that a person is an open enemy of Allah and His beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – we must not support that person and continue to have dislike in our hearts for that person. Bear in mind that like and dislike cannot be determined by our nafs, it is determined by the Pleasure of Allah Almighty and His beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.

The Holy Qur’an declares in Surah Taubah (9), verse 24:

Say, “If your fathers, and your sons, and your brothers, and your wives, and your tribe, and your acquired wealth, and the trade in which you fear a loss, and the houses of your liking – if all these are dearer to you than Allah and His Noble Messenger and fighting in His way, then wait until Allah brings about His command; and Allah does not guide the sinful.”

We make sincere Du’a in the Divine Court of Allah Almighty that He blesses our Muslim sisters with firmness and being steadfast in Islam. Ameen.

Happiness of the Angels on the Iman of Sayyiduna ‘Umar:

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – narrates:

When Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – embraced Islam, Sayyiduna Jibreel – peace be upon him – descended and said:

The people of the heavens (angels) are happy due to the Iman of Sayyiduna ‘Umar.

(Hakim)

Sayyiduna ‘Umar’s Islam Reduced the kufr to Half:

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – narrates:

When Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – embraced Islam, the kuffar said:

Today, we are reduced to half.

Hadrat ‘Umar’s Challenge to the Quraish

He asked, “O Prophet of Allah, are we not on the right path and are the Mushriks not on the path of misguidance.”

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “Certainly.”

He then asked, “Is it not true that our martyrs will enter Jannah and their dead will enter Hell?”

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “Certainly, this is what will happen.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – declared, “If this is the case, why should we hide and pray.  O Prophet of Allah, please lead us into the Haram.  I swear by Allah Almighty that in whichever gathering I had praised and raised the respect of Laat and Uzzah, in those places also, I will raise the flag of Islam.”

These blessed words were uttered by the mighty conqueror of Islam and the light of Islam, namely ‘Umar bin Al Khattab Quryashi Aduwi – may Allah be pleased with him.  This is that ‘Umar whose acceptance of Islam was a victory, whose migration was a victory, whose Khilafat was a victory and whose words and behaviour became a source of strength to other Muslims as a whole.

These early Muslims then left Daar Arqam in a small group flanked by Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – and Hadrat Sayyiduna Ameer Hamza – may Allah be pleased with him.  They left the place of safety at the time of midday.  All the time they were reading the Takbeer.  When the elders among the Quraish saw this, all of them came out to see what was happening. They were shocked to see that Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – had also accepted Islam.  They could only stand and watch and do nothing else.  They could only bite their fingers and do nothing else.

One of them mentioned that these people had taken away half of their strength. In other words, the position and stature of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – was such that it equaled half the belief of the Quraish!

Such is the blessing of Islam that when it becomes established in the heart of someone, then the path of success becomes clear and apparent.  The person then walks forward without fear and apprehension all the time holding the flag of Islam.

Such was Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar’s – may Allah be pleased with him – immense bravery that he did not want that only a few people among the Quraish come to know of his conversion to Islam.  He wanted all of them to know that he was now a Muslim.

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then asked people who was considered as the most powerful and influential people among the Quraish and he was informed that it was a person named Jameel bin Mu’amar Jahmi.  When he heard this name, he went straight to the person and informed him about his conversion to Islam.  All this person could do was stand up and walk towards the Haram and inform the other members of the Quraish what he had just heard.  In other words, personally, he could do nothing about it.  All the time Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – also walked behind this person to make sure that he informs everyone else.

Some of the Quraish who heard these words also attacked him in numbers, but Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – stood like a mountain.  All the time, he kept mentioning to them that either Muslims will remain in this city or the Quraish will remain here.

We see that Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – was one of those eminent Muslims who publicly announced that he would be migrating to Madina Shareef.  It is said that when he was preparing to leave, he prepared his sword and carried his bow in his hand and then approached the Quraish and declared to all of them, “O people of the Quraish! Those who wish to make their mothers weep for them or those who wish to make their children into orphans should follow me when I am migrating towards Madina Shareef.”

Suffice to say that not one of them had the courage to even follow him for a few paces leave alone all the way to Madina Shareef.

 (Al Khulud)

Sayyiduna ‘Umar’s Pride on the Slavery of His Master RasoolAllah:

Bahrul Uloom writes in the commentary of Mathnavi Shareef that once Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – was stitching his shirt and it became very hot to the extent that it momentarily blinded the vision of Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him.

He looked at the sun and said, “How dare you show your heat to the slave of RasoolAllah!”  After this it cooled down.

Hadrat ‘Umar and the Poor Family

One cold night Ameerul Mo’mineen, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – saw a light at a distance.  The light appeared as if someone was burning a fire.  He went to investigate, and he was also accompanied by another blessed companion, namely Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Auf – may Allah be pleased with him.

When Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – reached the place where he saw the fire, he noticed a woman sitting near the fire and around her, she was surrounded by three little girls.  The first child was telling her, “O beloved, please have kindness on our tears and give us something to eat.” The second child was saying, “O beloved mother! It seems that we will finally die from this hunger.” The third child was saying, “O beloved mother! Will we not be able to eat something before death approaches us?”

The great Muslim then approached this female and asked her, “O slave of Allah! Who is responsible for this state of yours?”

The female replied, “By Allah! The person who is responsible for this state of ours is none other than Ameerul Mo’mineen, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him.” (Obviously, she had no idea who she was talking to).

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then asked, “Has anyone informed ‘Umar of your condition?”

She replied, “He is our leader but is unaware of our state.  How can he be a true leader when he has no idea about the state and condition of his subjects?”

When Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – heard this, he immediately returned to the Baitul Maal and opened the doors.  The person who was on guard asked him whether everything was well.  Without saying anything further, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – grabbed a large container of ghee, honey and flour and tried to place it on his back.  However, his servant said that he should place these goods on his back. But Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – did not agree to this and insisted that these good be placed on his back.

The servant replied that how could he stand on one side while such a large burden was placed on the back of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him.  When Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – heard this, he asked the person, “May your mother be aware of you.  Please place these goods on my back.  Will you be able to carry the burden of my sins around your neck on the Day of Judgement?”

Saying this, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then carried all of these goods by himself.  When he reached the lady, he personally gave the food for these people and then after adding ghee and honey, he made sure that everyone consumed as much as they could.  All the time, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – was sitting on one side looking at this family.

After their hunger had been satisfied, the lady turned to the great Muslim leader and declared, “I swear by Allah ALmighty that you are much more entitled for the position of Khilaafah than ‘Umar himself.”

When Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – heard this, he informed her that she should come to Madina Shareef tomorrow and meet ‘Umar herself.  He also mentioned that ‘Umar will be there, and he would present her case in front of him.

After saying this, he then found a little mount to sit on so that he could further see the children.  However, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Auf – may Allah be pleased with him – mentioned to him that the night was becoming cold and that they should return as quickly as possible.

However, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I swear by Allah Almighty that I will not move from this place until I do not see these children laughing as I saw them crying when I arrived.”

The next day, after sunrise, this same female arrived in Madina Shareef.  She noticed that there were two people sitting around the same person who had brought her food the previous night.  The two people around him were Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – and Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud – may Allah be pleased with him.  They were also addressing this person as “Ameerul Mo’mineen”.  She also remembered her words where she had mentioned that the reason for their state was because of ‘Umar.  Obviously, she was extremely embarrassed for saying these words. In fact, as she drew nearer, it was like the ground had disappeared from under her feet.

The great Muslim leader could see that this female was extremely uncomfortable and embarrassed, and he said to her, “There is no need to concern yourself, you would not have known who I was. Tell me, how much will you sell your complaint for?”

However, she continued to tender her apology.  However, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – insisted, “I swear by Allah! You cannot move from this spot until you do not sell to me your complaint.”

Finally, the great Muslim purchased this complaint for six hundred Dirhams which he handed to her from his own personal money.  He then instructed Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – to bring some piece of item to write and some ink.  After these items were brought forward, he asked him to write the following, “I, Ali and ibn Mas’ud hereby bear witness that a certain female has sold her complaint to Ameerul Mo’mineen, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him”.

The great Muslim leader than took this recorded message and ordered them that when he passes away, this should be placed in his kafan.  He wanted to meet Allah Almighty having this in his possession. (Al Bidaayah wan Nihaayah, Ibn Katheer)

Abdur Rahman bin Auf – may Allah be pleased with him.

He is one of the blessed companions that is included among the “Ash’arah Mubashirah” or the blessed ten that were given glad tidings of Jannah while they were in this world.  He was also among those six blessed companions who were chosen by Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – to nominate the next leader of the Muslims.  He was born ten years after the Year of the Elephant.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Auf – may Allah be pleased with him – was also among those who accepted Islam prior to the establishment of the Daar Arqaam.  He took part in two migrations.  He took part in the Battle of Badr and in all the other battles of Islam. After the battle of Daumatul Jandal, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Auf – may Allah be pleased with him – married the daughter of that region, namely Asba’a bin Thalabah.  He was also responsible for the conquering of this area and during one journey of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – he was nominated as the person to perform the Fajr Salaah.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Auf – may Allah be pleased with him – passed away at the age of 72 in the 31st year of migration.  He was buried in Jannatul Baqi and his Janaza Salaah was performed by Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani – may Allah be pleased with him –.

This incident also proves the immense concern a true leader of Islam has about his subjects.  In other words, the blessed Ashaab were not name-sake Muslims. They were Muslims who were Muslims in the true sense of the word.  In today’s time, if we have to tell any so-called Muslim leader to carry a can of baked beans and give it to another poor Muslim, he will look at us like we are mad.  Again, there is no cure for being a “wannabi Muslim leader”.

Sayyiduna ‘Umar Sees with the Noor of Allah:

Shah Waliyyullah Muhaddith Dehlawi – may Allah be pleased with him – writes in his book Izaalat al-Khefa the follow incident:

One night, during the Caliphate of Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him, Sayyiduna ‘Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – was sleeping and saw a dream.

He saw that he went to the Masjid al-Nabawi shareef for Fajr Salah and the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – was the Imam.  Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – joined the Saff as a Muqtadi.  After concluding the Salah with Salam, RasoolAllah – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – turned his face towards the Sahaba.  One man at this juncture brought a basket of dates and offered it in the court of RasoolAllah – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – began with the distribution of the dates and the Sahaba took their turns and collected the dates.

Sayyiduna ‘Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – says that he too joined the queue, and when it was his turn, the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – gave me two dates.  I ate them and felt very satisfied.  My eyes opened after this and I could still taste the dates in my mouth.

When I opened my eyes, Fajr Adhan was going.   I never disclosed my dream upon anyone and went to Masjid al-Nabawi shareef for Fajr Salah.  When I entered, I saw that the Salah had already begun and Sayyiduna ‘Umar was the Imam, so I joined the Jama’at.

After concluding the Salah Sayyiduna ‘Umar turned his face towards the Sahaba.  One man at this juncture brought a basket of dates and offered it to Sayyiduna ‘Umar.

Sayyiduna ‘Umar began with the distribution of the dates and the Sahaba took their turns and collected the dates.

Sayyiduna ‘Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – says that he too joined the queue, and when it was his turn, Sayyiduna ‘Umar gave me two dates.  I ate them and felt very satisfied.  I asked them for the dates again upon which Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – said, “If only the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – had given more than two dates in the dream, I would gladly give you.”

Sayyiduna ‘Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – was taken aback hearing this and asked, “Ya Ameer al-Mu’mineen, who told you about my dream; did anyone inform you?”  He then said to himself, “Allah Almighty must have made him aware of it.”

Hearing this, Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – said:

Have you not heard the Hadeeth of RasoolAllah:

اِتَّقُوْا فِرَاسَۃَ الْمُوْمِنِ فَاِنَّہٗ یَنْظُرُ بِنُوْرِ اللّٰہِ

Be careful of the insight of a believer, for he indeed sees with Allah’s Noor.

Hadrat ‘Umar Service to Creation

It is reported that it was a very cold night when Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – was walking around Madina Shareef doing his normal rounds of taking care of people.  Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – noticed that outside Madina Shareef there was a little tent which had been erected.  At the entrance, there was an elderly person who also had an air of respectability to him. The person also looked like he had been travelling.  Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – greeted him and the person returned the greeting.  Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – also noticed that inside the tent, this person’s wife was also in labour.  He asked the old man, “Is there anyone else besides you in this tent?”

The old person replied, “Besides my wife and besides Allah Almighty, no one else is with her.”

The great Muslim leader was extremely surprised at the trust, steadfastness and patience of this person.

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then returned home and said to his wife, Sayyidah Umme Kulsum – may Allah be pleased with her, who was also the daughter of Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him, that, “What do you have to say about untold blessing which is present.”

She asked him what this was.  Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “There is a female who is in extreme labour.  Her husband is also quite old and besides Allah Almighty, they have no one else to help them. Gather all those things which a female would normally need at a time like this and I will also carry some food and provision for them”.

Both, then collected whatever they needed and started to walk towards this tent.  There was also a slight breeze and there was also a slight drizzle.  In this condition, they reached the tent.  Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar’s – may Allah be pleased with him – wife entered the tent and Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – sat near the doorway of this tent and prepared a fire. He placed the pot over the fire, and it is said that the smoke could be seen going through his beard.  Despite this, he continued his task until the food was prepared.

In the meantime, his blessed wife had delivered the baby and had also dressed the little baby.  She then came to the door of this tent and said, “O Ameerul Mo’mineen! Please give this person the goods news of the birth of a son.”

When this old person heard this, that the title of “Ameerul Mo’mineen” was used, he was shocked and was in a state of complete awe.  He then asked whether the great Muslim was really the leader of the Muslims and whether the lady inside his tent was really his wife.  He was surprised that people of such eminence could in fact do what they were doing.  He also made a lot of Du’a for them both.

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – informed him, “There is no need for you to be fearful”.

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then placed some food in a container and told him to take it to his wife.  He also informed him that the next day they should visit him in Madina Shareef.  As they were leaving, they could still hear the Du’a which was being made on their behalf by the couple.

When Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – reached home, he asked his blessed wife, “O Umme Kulsum! How did this incident appear to you?”

She replied, “O Ameerul Mo’mineen! May Allah give you immense blessing on our behalf for this act of yours.  In future, if there are such incidents, I will also be prepared to help and assist.  I am also always waiting to help and assist the creation of Allah Almighty. This is indeed a great blessing which the Allah Almighty has bestowed upon us.”

The next day, this person arrived at the blessed court of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him.  His head was also bowed at the immense favour which was done to him by the great Muslim leader and his wife. At the same time, he was also worried.

However, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – informed him, “Do not consider it a burden.”

Thereafter, ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – nominated a special monthly allowance for the couple on behalf of the state.  He also mentioned that they should remember him in their Du’as.” (ibn Jouzi)

This was the state of the past leaders of Islam.  They considered it a duty upon themselves and upon their families to serve creation.  They used to spend the entire night serving people and taking care of their needs.  They did not consider it a burden but a sense of blessing and Divine Grace.  This is the reason that people had such respect and such high regard for them.  There was also no dispute which arose between them and their subjects.

Shaikh Saadi – may Allah be pleased with him – has also stated that: “Tariqah without serving creation is nothing.  Even mere reading the Tasbeeh or getting into the position of Sajdah is nothing, (if one is unable to be of service to creation).”

Satan Runs Away from Sayyiduna ‘Umar:

Sayyidah ‘Ayesha – may Allah be pleased with her – reports that the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – has stated:

I see the evil jinn and humans running away from ‘Umar.

(Tirmidhi)

Satan tried to deceive Hadrat ‘Umar

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates:

Once I left my house with the intention of making Jum’uah.  On the road, I met Iblis who appeared as an old pious person.  He then asked me, “O ‘Umar, where are you intending to go?”

I replied that I was intending to go to the Masjid.

He then told to me that the Salaah was complete and I had missed my Jumu’ah Salaah.

However, I recognized who he was and grabbed him by the throat and neck and shouted at him, “May you be cursed even more.  Where you not someone who was once the most dedicated of worshippers and the pious? When it was said to you to bow down, you had refused to do so, you displayed pride and became from those who were the disbelievers and you will remain distanced from Allah Almighty until the Day of Judgement.”

He then asked me, “Tell me Umar! Think before giving me an answer. Is disobedience part of me or obedience? In fact, I had made Sajdah on numerous occasions under the Divine Throne.  In fact, there is not a place in the heavens where I had not made Sajdah and Ruku.  Despite this, I was told:

قَالَ فَاخْرُجْ مِنْہَا فَاِنَّکَ رَجِیۡمٌ ﴿ۙ۳۴﴾
وَّ اِنَّ عَلَیۡکَ اللَّعْنَۃَ اِلٰی یَوْمِ الدِّیۡنِ ﴿۳۵﴾

Said Allah, “Therefore exit from Paradise, for you are an outcast.” “And indeed you are accursed till the Day of Judgement.”

(Hajr 34/35)

Hadrat Sadrul Affadil – may Allah be pleased with him – explains in the Khazaa’inul Irfaan that, “The entire earth and heavens will curse Satan and when the Day of Judgement appears, with all his curses, he will be gripped in punishment and he will never be free of this.”

The Satan continued, “O ‘Umar! Are you certain that you will remain protected from the Secret Divine Decree of Allah Almighty? After all the Qur’an states:

اَفَاَمِنُوۡا مَکْرَ اللہِۚ فَلَا یَاۡمَنُ مَکْرَ اللہِ اِلَّا الْقَوْمُ الْخٰسِرُوۡنَ ﴿۹۹﴾٪

Are they oblivious to Allah’s secret plan? So none is unafraid of Allah’s

secret plan except the people of ruin! (Al ‘Araf, 99)

Hadrat Sadrul Affadil – may Allah be pleased with him – in the same treatise explains that, “There is no doubt that the sincere servants of Allah Almighty genuinely fear Allah Almighty.  It is mentioned that once, the blessed daughter of Rabee bin Khaythem – may Allah be pleased with him – asked her father, ‘What is the reason that when everyone is asleep and you are still awake?’ He replied, ‘O my beloved daughter! Your father is extremely fearful of sleeping at night.  I do not wish that this sleep becomes a reason for my obliviousness of the Dhikr of Allah Almighty and therefore becomes a means for my destruction.’”

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – continues, “I then said to him, ‘Get out from my sight.  I do not have the knowledge to be able to answer such questions.’”

In other words, it is always the wish of the Satan to create doubts in you and once the doubt is created, your consistency in Ibadah will also be affected.  This is also one of the greatest weapons which are used by the Munafiq.  They say that the Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – does not have this knowledge, he does not have that knowledge, he is unable to listen to your Salaam or Durood, he is unable to help and assist you, he cannot do this or he cannot do that, etc.

When a sincere Muslim faces these types of questions, sooner or later, he himself starts to question his beliefs and that is when he becomes a victim of the Satan. This is the reason that the eminent companion told Iblis to get out.  In other words, ‘I believe in whatever I believe in, whether you are happy or not means nothing to me’.  Likewise, when the Munafiq approaches you and starts to question you, tell him to go to Hell, after all, you are not insulting him, you are merely telling him to go to his actual residence.

Truth defines Sayyiduna ‘Umar and He is Farooq:

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – has stated:

Allah Almighty has proclaimed the truth on the tongue and heart of ‘Umar.   He is the measure of justice through whom Allah Almighty separates the truth and falsehood.
(Al-Sawa’iq al-Muhriqah p. 259)

The Secret of Sayyiduna ‘Umar’s Power:

After witnessing the power and bravery of Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – the kuffar asked him, “What is that power which enables you to challenge anyone?”

(Note:  Islamic rule was established rapidly during his caliphate to 2 million square miles)

He replied, “Listen.  If you are asking for the secret of our power, then here you go:  Your kings have taught you to love life whereas our Master – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – has taught us to love death.  And he who loves death becomes unwavering.

Hadrat ‘Umar’s Martyrdom

It is mentioned that in the month of Zil-Hajj 23 A.H. Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – appeared for the Fajr Salaah.  It was his habit that, as long as the lines were not straight, he did not allow the Takbeer to be read.  As he was straightening the lines, the slave of Hadrat Sayyiduna Mughayrah bin Shubah – may Allah be pleased with him, namely Abu Lulu, arrived.  In his hand, he had a dagger which was sharpened on both sides.  He then walked through the Musallies and went up to Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – and stabbed the great Muslim five of six times.  The final attempt on the life of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – proved fatal which was just below his navel.

The person reading Salaah at that time was Hadrat Sayyiduna Kaleeb bin Abul Kabeer – may Allah be pleased with him. Abu Lulu also attacked him, and he passed away from fatal wounds.  At the same time, the dagger itself was coated with poison which made the attack even more fatal.

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him, who was fatally wounded, then asked whether Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Auf – may Allah be pleased with him – was present and he was then sent to the front to complete the Fajr Salaah.  After the Salaah, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – was then taken to his house.  He then called Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Auf – may Allah be pleased with him – to his house and said to him, “I wish to hand over a great responsibility to you”.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Auf – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I make a plea to you in the Divine Name of Almighty Allah that you will you not present the position of Ameerul Mo’mineen to me.”

He replied that this was not his intent.  Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then declared, “Please remain silent on this issue.  Do speak to anyone until I nominate those people to this position with whom the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – was pleased until his final moments in this world.  Please call Ali, ‘Uthman and Sa’ad bin Abi Waqqas and wait for Talha.  If he arrives then fine otherwise, choose any of these people for this position.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then looked at Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – and said, “O Ali! I swear in the Divine Name of Almighty Allah that if I give you the task of control over the Muslims, you should not choose any of your clan members above the others.” He also gave the same advice to Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman and Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’ad – may Allah be pleased with them.  He told them to go and choose whosoever they wished among the people he had mentioned.

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then instructed Hadrat Sayyiduna Suhaib Rumi – may Allah be pleased with him – to lead the Salaah.  He then also instructed Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Talha Ansari – may Allah be pleased with him – to stand at the door and not to allow anyone to enter while the issue of Khilafat was been discussed.

He then gave the following advice, “I give advice to the future leader of the Muslims to treat the people of Madina Shareef with great kindness.  He should always be good to them and take care of their needs.  He should also bear in mind that these blessed people had made many sacrifices for the Divine Pleasure of Allah Almighty and His beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.  They were also people who had chosen the Hereafter in place of the world.  My advice is that good behaviour should be displayed with those who are good among the Ansaar, and as for those who are not that good, still too, one should pardon them and overlook their inefficiency.  I also advice the new leader that he should also pay special attention to the Arabs because the Arabs are the actual root of Islam.  One should take the Sadqah and charity from those who are wealthy among them and this should be distributed among the poor and destitute.  I also advice the new leader that he should pay attention to the pact and treaties which still existed between various Christian and Jewish tribes.  This is the teaching of the Holy Prophet Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. O Allah Almighty! Please be aware that I have conveyed Your message.”

After giving this advice, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then called his son, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – and said to him, “O Abdullah! Go and see who the person that has stabbed me is.”

His son replied, “O Ameerul Mo’mineen! Your attacker is the Christian slave of Hadrat Sayyiduna Mughayrah bin Shubah.”

When Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – heard this answer, he sighed deeply and remarked, “All Praise is due to Allah Almighty that my death will not be through the hands of that person who had made one single Sajdah to the Almighty Allah.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then said to his son, “Go and ask the Mother of the believers whether she will allow me to be buried next to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – May Allah be pleased with him.”

When Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – presented this requested to her, she began to weep and then said, “It was my wish to be buried next to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and my father, however, I give preference to the request of the Ameerul Mo’mineen.” It was only after this, that the great leader was buried next to them.
