It is reported that once during the era of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – the Muslims besieged the city of Damascus. At the same time, the Romans also locked themselves in and made sure that the Muslims could not enter the city. The leader in the city was the father-in-law of Heracles, a person with the name of Tuma. Tuma then gathered the citizens at an entrance named after him and holding the bible he prayed with everyone for victory.

Tuma then exited the city and attacked the Muslims with extreme ferocity with fire balls and rocks and targeted the Muslims with arrows, etc. In this attack many Muslims were martyred and injured. Among the seriously injured was also an eminent companion named Hadrat Sayyiduna Abbaan bin Sa’ad bin Aasi – may Allah be pleased with him. A few moments later, he also passed away when he was hit with an arrow.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abbaan bin Sa’ad bin Aasi – may Allah be pleased with him – had also married very recently to his cousin sister. His wife was also in the army as well. She was extremely brave and courageous and when she heard about the martyrdom of her husband, she still continued to display immense patience.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abbaan bin Sa’ad bin Aasi – may Allah be pleased with him – was then buried and Hadrat Sayyiduna Khalid bin Waleed – may Allah be pleased with him – performed the Janaza. However, when he was buried, his wife did not continue to sit at the grave. She prepared her weapons and also joined the other Muslims in the battle front. She did not inform Hadrat Sayyiduna Khalid bin Waleed – may Allah be pleased with him – because she did not want him to stop her from going forward. She then asked at which entrance her husband had been martyred and they informed her that it was at the entrance of Tuma. She then joined the other Muslims who were trying to attack this entrance. She fought so bravely and with such courage that others could only look in amazement. Her bow was strong and her pouch of arrows were also filled. She attacked those who were carrying the cross and managed to kill many of them.

When Tuma saw this, he became enraged and decided to carry out any all-out attack on the Muslims. When Tuma saw that the cross had been captured by Hadrat Sayyiduna Sarjeel – may Allah be pleased with him, he tried to attack him. When the brave lady saw this, she also came to the assistance of Hadrat Sayyiduna Sarjeel – may Allah be pleased with him. Her arrow pierced one eye of Tuma. Tuma ran back in fear and the other Romans soldiers decided to attack this female but she was quickly surrounded by the other Muslims who came to her aid.

She then noticed someone who looked like a Roman Commander and attacked this person and her arrow pieced his chest. He also fell like a tree in front of his soldiers. The other Muslims then attacked and again the Romans were in retreat.

As much as the Romans Generals forced their army to fight, when they saw the bravery of the Muslims, they had lost all confidence in fighting.

This was the example of only one female in the Muslim army and there were many like this. This is also an example of how Muslims should behave in the modern world as well. It is sad that Muslims do not learn a lesson from these brave Muslims of the past. (Al Khulud)
