It is famously mentioned about the eminent Saint Hadrat Sayyiduna Ayub Sakhtiyani – may Allah be pleased with him – that he used to spend the entire night in Ibadah and he kept this a secret. However, if anyone called out to him in the morning he used to appear as if he had just awoken from his sleep.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Zarr – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – had stated that, “That person has been successful who has purified his heart with pure Imaan and had cleaned his heart. He has made his words the truth and has silenced his nafs and has surrounded himself with good behaviour.” (Musnad Imam Ahmed)

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “The foundation of all action is upon the intention. Every person will be repaid according to his intention.” (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Without doubt, the Allah Almighty does not look at your appearance and your state, or your wealth and riches, He looks at your actions and your intention.” (Sahih Muslim)

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “When a person goes to sleep and makes the intention to perform the Tahajjud but he does not awake, he will receive the reward for this action for which he made intention for. As his sleep will become a sadqah for him on behalf of his Lord.” (Sunan Nisaa’i)

In other words, such is the Immense Divine Mercy of Allah Almighty that Allah Almighty actually transforms this person’s sleep into Sadaqa or charity. Imagine, the person is doing nothing but sleeping, yet the Divine Grace of Allah Almighty makes this mere act of sleep as a source of blessing and reward for the person. When people say that there is no words to describe the Infinite Mercy of Allah Almighty, this is one simple example of that.

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – once explained that an army will leave to invade the Ka’ba, however, when it reaches Bayda (which is a certain area), the first and last group will be swallowed up by the earth.

Hadrat Sayyidah Ay’Isha – may Allah be pleased with him – asked, “O Prophet of Allah! Why will the last group also be swallowed by the earth which they will be mere traders and there will also be others among them who are actually not from them?”

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “The first and last among them will be swallowed by the earth and thereafter, they will arise according to their Niyyah. (On the Day of Judgement, their actions will be determined by their intention).” (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

Hence, we should correct our intention before we do anything and make sure that our intention is strictly for the Divine Pleasure of Allah Almighty. We should protect ourselves from self-conceit, pride and boast. This has always been the habit and behaviour of the blessed Ashaab, the Awliyah and the sincere Muslims.
