Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Mohammed Sufyan bin Ayniyah bin Imraan Maymun Hilaali – may Allah be pleased with him – was born in Kufah. With regard to him the Ummah is unanimous on his piety, humility and his immense knowledge.

 

As for the Science of Ahadith, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Mohammed Sufyan bin Ayniyah – may Allah be pleased with him – is accepted as an authentic authority. He spent time in the blessed company of many eminent Saints and scholars of Islam.

 

Among his teachers were such great authorities in Islam as Imam Jafer Saadiq, Imam Zuhri, Imam Sulayman Teemi, Imam Sufyan Thouri – may Allah be pleased with them – etc.

 

As for his list of eminent students, they also appear as a who’s who in Islamic history such as Imam Shafi and Imam Ahmed bin Hambal – may Allah be pleased with them – them among others.

 

He was also considered as one of the most pious in his era and a great powerhouse of spirituality. Such was his piety that it is said that he only consumed dry bread for nearly sixty years without any gravy. He was also a Saahib-e-Karaamat and it is said that he memorized the Qur’an at the age of four. At the age of only seven, he began to record and narrate Ahadith.

 

Although Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Mohammed Sufyan bin Ayniyah – may Allah be pleased with him – was originally from Kufah, he settled in Mecca Shareef. He is said to have completed seventy Hajj.

 

Another interesting fact is mentioned by Imam Hasan bin Imran – may Allah be pleased with him – who narrates, “I was once with the great Imam in Muzdalifah when he made Du’a, ‘O Allah! Please do not make this my final visit to Muzdalifah.’ He then turned to us and said, ‘I have made this Du’a for nearly seventy years in Muzdalifah, however, I am now feeling ashamed to ask Allah for more.’ He then returned home and did not get the chance to perform Hajj again.” He passed away the same year on the 1st of Rajab 198 A.H.. He was buried in Mecca Shareef. (Tabqaat, Ikmaal, Tahzeeb)
