The Mother of the Faithful, Hadrat Sayyidah Ayesha – may Allah be pleased with him, mentions that when the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and the rest of the Muslims were travelling towards Badr, a person appeared to them at a certain place and began to boast about his bravery. When the Muslims heard these stories, they were very pleased.

He then asked the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – whether he could follow them and fight with them and also die with them. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – asked him to bring faith in Allah and His Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. The person refused to do this.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then asked him to return from where he came from because they had no need for the help of a Mushrik.

As they moved along, they arrived at a certain tree and the person appeared a second time. He again mentioned the same words and the again the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – gave the same answer which he had given in the beginning. When the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – reached the place of Bayda, the person again appeared in front of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. For a third time, he mentioned the same thing to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and again the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – gave him the same answer.

However, this time he mentioned that he believed in Allah and the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. When he accepted the article of faith, only then did the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – give him permission to join them. (Sahih Muslim)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah – may Allah be pleased with him – mentions that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Whoever wishes to swear an oath, should swear an oath in the Name of Allah Almighty or remain silent.” (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)
