Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Tahmaan – may Allah be pleased with him – is considered to be one of the eminent students of Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam A’zam Abu Hanifah – may Allah be pleased with him. One of his special qualities is that the great Imam also narrated Ahadith from him. This is mentioned by Imam Zehbi – may Allah be pleased with him – that even his other teacher, Hadrat Sayyiduna Safwan bin Sulaim – may Allah be pleased with him – also did the same. In the faculty of Hadith, this is known as “Rawaayat Al Akaabir ‘an Al Asaaghir”. In other words, a narration from someone who is junior to someone who is senior.

Imam Abdullah bin Mubaarak – may Allah be pleased with him – also describes Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Tahmaan – may Allah be pleased with him – as someone who is extremely authentic and a clear symbol of Taqwah.

Qadi Yahya bin Aktham – may Allah be pleased with him – mentions the same words but also mentions that Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Tahmaan – may Allah be pleased with him – was also someone who was entangled in the controversy of the authenticity of the Hadith that Imaan and action are two separate entities. However, finally, even Imam Zehbi – may Allah be pleased with him – had to admit that this is an authentic Hadith and a correct point of view.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Tahmaan – may Allah be pleased with him – was such an eminent Saint and scholar that once, Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Ahmed bin Hambal – may Allah be pleased with him – was laying on bed because he was unwell and someone mentioned the name of Hadrat Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Tahmaan – may Allah be pleased with him – the great Imam immediately sat up when he heard his name. He then declared to everyone around the bed, “When the pious are mentioned, it is unbecoming that one should lay in bed.”

It is mentioned that Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Tahmaan – may Allah be pleased with him – was born in Herat and spent a long time in Nishaapur but in his last few years, he lived in Mecca Shareef and passed away in that blessed city in 163 A.H. (Tadkirah Al Huffaz, Tahzeeb)
