Hadrat Sayyiduna Jabir – may Allah be pleased with him – mentions that they once accompanied the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – to certain parts of Najd on Jihad. When he was returning from this expedition, Hadrat Sayyiduna Jabir – may Allah be pleased with him – was also with him.
One day, while on this journey, during the time of midday, they decided to rest in an area in which there were many acacia trees. The blessed companions then found their own spots under the shade of these trees and decided to rest for a while. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – also decided to rest under one of these trees and placed his weapons on one of the branches.
Hadrat Sayyiduna Jabir – may Allah be pleased with him – mentions that not long after they had gone to rest when they heard the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him –calling for them. As they appeared in front of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – they noticed that he was still resting but next to him there was a Bedouin.
After they had all gathered, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him –explained to them, “While I was sleeping this villager took hold of my weapons and stood over me and when I opened my eyes, I noticed that he was standing over me with a naked sword. He then asked me, ‘Who will save you from me?’ I replied that Allah Almighty will save me from you. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – mentioned these words on three occasions and the villager was not punished for his actions. (Sahih Bukhari)
Another incident of his nature is recorded by Abu Bakr Ismail in his Sahih. In this incident, it is mentioned that the villager had taken the sword of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and stood over him and then asked, “Who will protect you against me?”
The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied that Allah will protect him.
When the villager heard these words, he began to tremble and the sword fell from his hands. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then grabbed the sword and held it over the villager and asked him, “Who will protect you against me if I wish to kill you?”
The villager replied, “You are someone who captures people through goodness and I have hope that there will be no revenge from your side and that you will pardon me.”
The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then asked him to read the Kalimah. However, the villager refused to accept the invitation of Islam but did promise that he will never fight against the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – or join others who will try and fight against him.
The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then decided to allow the villager to go free.
It is mentioned that when he returned to his people, he made an announcement to them in the following words. He declared, “O people, I am returning from such a person who is the best and the most noble of people.” (Musnad Imam Ahmed)
