Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – sent a message to Wahsi to accept Islam. This is the person who had killed and mutilated the blessed body of Hadrat Sayyiduna Ameer Hamza – may Allah be pleased with him. In reply, he sent a message to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, “O Muhammad! How can you invite me to Islam when you yourself have mentioned that, that person who had taken an innocent life, who has committed Shirk and has committed adultery, his punishment will be double on the Day of Judgement and he will remain forever in the Fire of Hell? I have committed all of these crimes. If there anyway that I will be pardoned?”
When this question arose, verse 70 of the Surah Al Furqan was revealed which is:
اِلَّا مَنۡ تَابَ وَاٰمَنَ وَعَمِلَ عَمَلًا صٰلِحًا فَاُولٰٓئِکَ یُبَدِّلُ اللہُ سَیِّاٰتِہِمْ حَسَنٰتٍؕ وَکَانَ اللہُ غَفُوۡرًا رَّحِیۡمًا ﴿۷۰﴾
Except one who repents and accepts faith and does good deeds – so
Allah will turn their evil deeds into virtues; and Allah is Oft Forgiving, Most Merciful.
The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then sent this verse to Wahshi and his companions. When Wahshi saw this, he said that this was indeed a very difficult condition and that maybe, he would not be able to practise on this. Wahshi wanted to know whether there was any other way (for him to be pardoned).
Allah Almighty then revealed the 48 verse of Surah Nisa which is:
اِنَّ اللہَ لَا یَغْفِرُ اَنۡ یُّشْرَکَ بِہٖ وَیَغْفِرُ مَا دُوۡنَ ذٰلِکَ لِمَنۡ یَّشَآءُ ۚ وَمَنۡ یُّشْرِکْ بِاللہِ فَقَدِ افْتَـرٰۤی اِثْمًا عَظِیۡمًا ﴿۴۸﴾
Undoubtedly Allah does not forgive (the sin of ) of disbelieving in Him and forgives anything lower than it to whomever He wills; and whoever ascribes partners to Allah has invented a tremendous sin.
Hadrat Moulana Sayed Na’eemudeen Muradabadi – may Allah be pleased with him – in the Tafseer Khazaa’inul Irfan explains, “The meaning of this verse is that whoever dies in Kufr, he will never be pardoned. He will remain in the Fire of Hell forever. And as for that person who has not committed this Kufr even though he may have committed other major sins and dies without making Taubah, his pardon is up to Allah Almighty and he will not remain in Hell forever. If Allah Almighty wishes, He will punish the person and then allow him to enter Jannah or if He wishes, He will pardon the person. In this verse, a type of encouragement is been given to the Jews and it also proves that in Shari’ah law, the Jews (and Christians) are actually Mushriks and it is correct to call them Mushriks.”
Again when this verse was sent to Wahshi, he again asked, “Until now, I am in doubt whether I will be pardoned or not. Is there any other option which is open?”
Allah Almighty then revealed the verses of the Qur’an wherein it is clearly mentioned that one should not give up hope on the Divine Mercy of Allah Almighty and that the Allah Almighty will pardon all sins. When Wahshi received these verses, he was convinced on the truth of Islam. He then appeared in front of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – with is other companions and accepted Islam.
At the same time, due to his action against the blessed uncle of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, he was also informed never to sit in front of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – ever again. The blessed Ashaab also inquired from the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – whether these verses were only for Wahshi and he replied that no, these verses were for all the Muslims.
