The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Whosoever visits my grave, thereby visiting me, it is like he has visited me while I was in this world. Whosoever dies in any of the Haram, on the Day of Judgement, he will arise as someone who is in safety. There is no doubt that the area between my blessed grave and my Mimbar is a garden from among the gardens of Jannah.” (Bukhari Shareef, Daar-e-Qutni)

In another Hadith Shareef, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “He who visits my grave, my intercession for him has become Waajib.” (Daar-e-Qutni)

Moula-e-Kaa’inaat, Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “He who visits me after I have passed away, it is like he had visited me when I was alive (in this world). He who does not visit my grave, he has indeed insulted me.” (Daar-e-Qutni, Imam Daylimi, Firdousul Akhbaar)

The beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “He who visits me after I pass away and send Salaams upon me, then in reply, I send a reply to him ten times over. Ten Angels will also visit him and all of them will send Salaam upon him. And he who reads Salaam upon me in his house, the Allah Almighty will return my soul to me until I also send Salaam upon that person.” (Sunan Abu Daud)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with them – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “He who performs the Hajj after I have passed away and visits my grave, then it is like he has visited me when I was alive (in this world).” (Sunan Daar-e-Qutni)

A Bedouin was pardoned.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that, “Three days after the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – passed away a Bedouin approached the blessed grave of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and he placed his head on the blessed grave. He also placed some of the blessed sand of the grave on his head. He then stated, ‘Ya Rasoolallah As Salaam Alaik, Sallal laahu alaik.’

“Whatever the Bedouin heard, we also heard. The verse pertaining to this is the 64th verse in Surah Nisaa which is:

‘And We did not send any Noble Messenger except that he be obeyed by Allah’s command; and if they, when they have wronged their own souls, come humbly to you (O dear Prophet Muhammad – peace and blessings be upon him) and seek forgiveness from Allah, and the Noble Messenger intercedes for them, they will certainly find Allah as the Most Acceptor of Repentance, the Most Merciful.’”

Sadrul Afaadil, Hadrat Moulana Na’eemudeen Muradabadi in the Khazaa’inul Irfaan states that, “If someone commits a sin or any transgression and thereby commits oppression against his own self. (Then this is how a person can achieve the Divine Pardon of the Allah Almighty). We also come to realise that it is permissible to use the blessed Wasilah of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and also ask for his intercession.”

After explaining this, Sadrul Afaadil – may Allah be pleased with him – also presents a few points.

  1. To use the Wasilah of the beloved servants of Allah Almighty is permissible and recommended.
  2. To also visit the graves of the pious and blessed servants of Allah Almighty to acquire one’s needs in also permissible. This verse clearly proves this. (After all, the message of the Qur’an is for all Muslims at all times. If we say that one only has to be in Madina Shareef to do this, then what about the poor Muslims who cannot afford to travel there? Does it mean that the Qur’an is only for people who can afford a ticket to go to Madina Shareef? Certainly not! At the same time, it is also permissible to call out to the blessed servants of Allah Almighty because in this incident, the Bedouin used the words “Ya Rasoolallah”.

The words he used are, “I have wronged myself and now I am presenting myself at your blessed court so that you can implore the Lord on my behalf so that I can be pardoned.” It is mentioned that from the blessed grave, the following words were heard, “O so and so, you have been pardoned.” (Tafseer Qurtabi)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abul Husan Sufi – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that, “Hadrat Sayyiduna Haatim Asam – may Allah be pleased with him – once stood in front of the blessed grave and uttered the words, ‘O my Lord! I have visited the blessed grave of Your beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. Please do not allow me to leave empty-handed.’ A voice was heard, ‘O my slave! I had ordered you to visit the grave of My beloved so that I could pardon you and those with you. Now you and those with you return as people who have been pardoned. Without doubt, Allah Almighty has become pleased with you and with them, those who visited the blessed grave of His beloved – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.’”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abul Fadl – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that, “Once a Bedouin approached the blessed grave of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and began to utter the words, ‘O Allah! You have commanded that a slave be freed at the blessed grave of your beloved. Please give me a sign that I am free from the fire of Hell.’ Suddenly a voice was heard saying, ‘You have only asked freedom from the Fire of Hell for yourself. Why did you not ask freedom for all creation so that through the Sadqah of the blessed grave of the beloved, all could have been freed from the Fire of Hell. O Bedouin, go I have freed you from the Fire of Hell.’”

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – blessed him with bread.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Alaa – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that, “I once arrived in Madina Shareef and I also experienced great hunger. I then visited the blessed grave of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and also the blessed graves of the Shaikhain and then presented my greeting. After this, I mentioned, ‘O Prophet of Allah! I am present at your blessed court and through hunger, I am in this state which no one is aware of except the Allah Almighty. Therefore, this evening, I am present myself as your guest.’ Suddenly I was overtaken by great slumber. In a dream, I saw the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and he blessed me with some bread. In the dream, I consumed half of this bread and when I awoke, I saw that I still had half bread with me. I then understood the blessed words of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – which were that, “Whoever sees me in a dream, he has seen me in reality because the Satan is unable to impersonate me.’ (Sahih Bukhari Shareef) Suddenly, I also heard a voice say, ‘O Abdullah! Whoever visits my grave, he will be pardoned and forgiven and tomorrow on the Day of Judgement, I will intercede for him.’”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abul Fadl Mohammed bin Naeem – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that Hadrat Sayyiduna Mohammed bin Ya’la Kinaani – may Allah be pleased with him – used to always visit the blessed grave of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – in abundance.

He used to also always see the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – in his dream. One day, he left to visit the blessed grave of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – when he injured his leg. Hence, he could not manage to visit the blessed grave. The people that were going for Hajj also continued to leave for Hajj. He wrote a message and handed it to a certain person who was in this Hajj caravan. He mentioned to the person that when he visits the blessed grave of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, he must mention his Salaam and also mention to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – the reason why he could not come, even though, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – is fully aware of what had happened to him. When this person had conveyed the message, Hadrat Sayyiduna Kinaani – may Allah be pleased with him – saw the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – in a dream. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – mentioned to him, “O Kinaani! Your letter has reached me and I have accepted your excuse.”

How can he be oblivious of his servants?

Hadrat Sayyiduna Utbah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates, “I was once sitting at the blessed grave of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – when I saw a Bedouin approaching on a camel. After alighting from the camel, he approached the blessed grave of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and greeted the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. He then mentioned the above verse and also mentioned that Allah Almighty had revealed this to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. He also mentioned that he had caused harm to himself and that he had approached the blessed grave to seek pardon for his sins. He also asked the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – to intercede for him.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Utbah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates further, “I then felt sleepy and I was blessed with the Ziyarah of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. He said to me, “O Utbah! Give glad tidings to that Bedouin that Allah Almighty has pardoned him.” (Ibn Qudaamah)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Utbah – may Allah be pleased with him – also states that, “I saw Hadrat Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik – may Allah be pleased with him – visiting the blessed grave of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and I also saw him raise his hands as if he was about to read the Salaah. He then presented his Salaam in the blessed court of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and then returned.” (Shuhubul Imaan)

Hadrat Sayyiduna ibn Wahb – may Allah be pleased with him – also narrates that when Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Malik – may Allah be pleased with him – used to present his Salaam at the blessed grave of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, he should approach the blessed grave and stand extremely close but he never touched the blessed grave.
