It is reported that once, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – in the company of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud – may Allah be pleased with him – was walking around Madina Shareef as a form of patrol. They saw a light from the distance. They walked towards this light. As they came near, they noticed that the light was coming from inside a house. Suddenly, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – walked into the yard of this house alone. He was shocked by what he saw. There was an old person sitting with a bottle of alcohol in his hand and there were females who were singing and dancing in front of him. It was nearly midnight. Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then said to the person, “Tonight, besides this old man, I have not seen anyone else commit such a foul act. He is in his final stages of life and yet, he is busy in drinking and vice.”
The old person then said to him, “O Ameerul Mo’mineen! There is no doubt that what I am doing is not nice, but look carefully, what you did was even worse. You have spied on me even though Islam has prohibited spying on other people and you also entered my yard without my permission and this is also not permitted.”
Hadrat Sayyiduna Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – admitted that he had spoken the truth.
He then left the house weeping and kept saying, “May the mother of ‘Umar find that he is lost if the Allah Almighty does not pardon him. This person was committing these acts in the privacy of his house and they will continue to commit these actions because they will say that ‘Umar has now already seen them”.
It is reported that prior to this incident, this person used to visit the gathering of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him. However, due to embarrassment and fear, he stopped coming. A few days later, this person did come to the gathering but he decided to hide himself and sat right at the back of the crowd. However, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – did notice him.
He then commanded that the old person come near him. By now the person was in a state of panic and people were also saying to him to sit next to Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him. Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – continued to call this person until he came and sat right next to the great Muslim leader. He then said to the person to bring his ears closed. When this person had placed his ears near the great Muslim, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – said to him every silently without anyone else hearing that, “Listen carefully, I swear in the Divine Name of that Creator Who had the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – with the truth. Whatever I had seen on that day, I have never revealed this to anyone. In fact, I had not even mentioned this to Ibn Mas’ud even though he was with me on that night.”
The person then said to the great Muslim leader, “O Ameerul Mo’mineen! Please bring your ears near me.” When the great Muslim leader placed his ears near this person, the person silently said to him, “I swear by that Divine Being who had sent the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – with the truth from that night until this moment of entering this gathering, I have never committed such an act again.”
When the great Muslim ruler heard these words, he was so happy and joyous that he shouted out “Allahu Akbar”.
Another important fact is that no one in the gathering was aware of why he had done so. (Hayaat As Sahaabah, Kanzul Ummaal)
