Download PDF: [S] The Scholar who answers a Jew

It is reported that when Hadrat Haatim Asim – may Allah be pleased with him – arrived in Baghdad Shareef, he came to know that there was a Jew in this city who claimed that he could beat any Islamic scholar. The people advised Hadrat Haatim Asim – may Allah be pleased with him – about this and he mentioned that he wanted to visit this Jewish scholar.

When the Jew arrived, he asked Hadrat Haatim – may Allah be pleased with him – the following questions, “Which is that which is not known by Allah Almighty? Which is that which is not found with Allah Almighty? Which is that which is not found among the treasures of Allah Almighty? Which is that which Allah Almighty will question His servant about? What is that which Allah Almighty fastens? And which is that which Allah Almighty loosens?”

After listening to these questions, Hadrat Haatim – may Allah be pleased with him –asked him, “If I am able to give you the answers to all of this, will you accept Islam?” The Jew replied that he would accept Islam.

Hadrat Haatim – may Allah be pleased with him – then replied, “That which is not known by the Allah Almighty are those things which are created as His partners, like a son or another deity. As for that which is not found with Allah Almighty, it is oppression. Without doubt, Allah Almighty does not oppress the creation. As for that which is not among the treasures of Allah Almighty is poverty and need. The reason is that Allah Almighty is Divinely Independent and every creation is poor compared to His Divine Being. As for that which He will question people about is that debt which He asks for from them. As for that which He fastens, it is the belt of idolater which He fastens around the neck of someone if they insist on committing idol worship. As for that which He opens, it is the belt around the neck of His beloved servants.”

When the Jew heard heard this, he immediately accepted Islam.
