It is mentioned that on one the occasion when the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – travelled to Tabuk, a most amazing miracle took place. This is narrated by Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Ma’sud – may Allah be pleased with him. He narrates:

I once awoke at night and approached the bed of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. I found that he was not present.

I then placed my hand on the blessed bed and found that it was still cold. I then approached the bed of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – and also found that he was not present as well on his bed. The same happened when I approached the bed of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him.

I noticed a light coming from the direction of one corner of the camp site and I turned and walked towards this light. When I reached there, I noticed that a grave had been dug and the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – was inside this grave. There was also a body on one side. The body was being carried by Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – and the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – was saying to him, “Please give me the body of your companion.” The body was then placed in the grave by the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – himself. His eyes were also over flowing with tears. He then turned towards the Qiblah and said, “O Allah, until the very last moment (of his life), I have been pleased with the person who has passed away, You also be pleased with him.” (Majma’uz Zawaa’id, Imam Haythimi, 9/369)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud – may Allah be pleased with him – continues:

I then asked who the person was and those present replied, “It is your companion Abdullah or the one with two pieces of cloth and who passed away in the first part of the night.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that, “I swear by Allah that it was my ardent wish that if only I was the person who had passed away.”

A short description of this eminent companion.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah – may Allah be pleased with him – or “the one with two pieces of cloth” is very interesting. His actual name is Abdullah bin Abde Nahem bin Afeef. He was born an orphan and he was cared for by his uncle. In the day of ignorance, his name was Abdul Uzza. After he accepted Islam, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – gave him the name of Abdullah.

At the same time, when he accepted Islam, his tribe and family took everything away from him. He had no house, no belongings and nothing whatsoever except a thick shawl or chaddar. He then tore this into two pieces and used one part to cover his upper body and one part to cover his lower body and decided to walk towards Madina Shareef. When the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – saw him in this state, he declared, “O the one with two pieces of cloth.” He also became one of the most learned of companions. He was immensely kind and used to recite the Qur’an in abundance. As we have seen, he passed away during the expedition of Tabuk. (Usdul Ghaabah, Vol. 3)
