It is mentioned that once Harun Rashid had a special Christian doctor for who he had soft spot. The doctor was also very intelligent. One day, Harun Rashid said to him. “If only you could accept Islam then I would certainly give you a most supreme position in my court.”

The doctor replied, “O Ameerul Mo’mineen! There is one verse of the Qur’an which restricts me from accepting Islam otherwise, I would certainly accept Islam.”

Obviously, Harun Rashid was shocked when he heard this and asked the doctor which Qur’anic verse has stopped him from accepting Islam. He replied that the verse in question was the 171st verse of Surah Nisaa (4) which is:

اِنَّمَا الْمَسِیۡحُ عِیۡسَی ابْنُ مَرْیَمَ رَسُوۡلُ اللہِ وَکَلِمَتُہٗ ۚ اَلْقٰىہَاۤ اِلٰی مَرْیَمَ وَرُوۡحٌ مِّنْہُ ۫

“’Isa the son of Maryam, is purely a Noble Messenger of Allah, and His Word; which He sent towards Maryam, and a Spirit from Him;”

In this verse the words used are “from Him”, therefore this is proving from Nabi Isa – peace be upon him – is from Allah Almighty and therefore part of Him. Ma’azallah. When Harun Rashid heard this, he was quite shocked and called all the other experts in his court to verify this.

However, at that time, there was no one who was able to give an answer immediately. At that time, he came to know that the famous Mufassir, namely Imam Ali bin Husain Maruzi – may Allah be pleased with him,  had arrived in Baghdad after completing his Hajj and was staying in the city of a few days. Harun Rashid called Imam Ali bin Husain Maruzi – may Allah be pleased with him – to the palace and explained to him his predicament. He also could not give the answer immediately.

Imam Ali bin Husain Maruzi – may Allah be pleased with him – also promised the Sultan that he should be given a few days to think about it and when he has the answer, he will immediately come to his palace. Imam Ali bin Husain Maruzi – may Allah be pleased with him – also made it clear that as long as he does get the answer to this, he will not rest and he will not eat or drink anything. After saying this, he entered his room and started to read the Qur’an.

When Imam Ali bin Husain Maruzi – may Allah be pleased with him – started to read the 13th verse of Surah Jasiya (4) which is,

وَ سَخَّرَ لَکُمۡ مَّا فِی السَّمٰوٰتِ وَمَا فِی الْاَرْضِ جَمِیۡعًا مِّنْہُ ؕ

“and He has subjected whatever is in the heavens and earth by His Command,”

he immediately jumped up. He then went straight to the palace of Harun Rashid and presented this verse to the Christian doctor. He then explained that in both these verses, the words used are from Him and if this is accepted, then it means that the heavens and earth are also part of Him which is impossible. Therefore, since one is not part of Him, in like manner, the other can also not be part of Him. In fact, like the heavens and earth, Nabi ‘Isa – peace be upon him – is also part of the creation of Allah. When the doctor heard this explanation, he himself was speechless and immediately recited the Kalimah and became Muslim.

When the great scholar returned to his country, he started to write a masterpiece called “Al Nazaa’ir fi Al Qur’an”. This is indeed a very special treatise and in this book the great scholar had answered all these types of questions and confusions which are presented by the non-Muslims. In fact, so comprehensive was this book and until the Day of Judgement, it is able to answer questions pertaining to intricate issues of the Qur’an. (Ruhul Bayan)

There is no doubt that the ‘Ulama of the past certainly dedicated a lot of time and effort to educate people and teach people about the real essence of Islam. It is unlike the present day when the ‘Ulama are left on the streets while the dogs of the world fight over a few crumbs in the world.

It is also a lesson for the ‘Ulama themselves to make sure that they are ever ready to make Jihad with their knowledge and with their pens to defend and to stand up for Islam. Another great tragedy which we find among the ‘Ulama is that some of them do not understand the language of the people where they are living. In this manner they spend the rest of their lives living as ordinary Imams who merely read the five daily Salaah while all around them Munafiqat and Kufr is being spread. In other words, there are people who do not change themselves but make an effort to change the Qur’an to suit themselves.
