In Surah Al Ahzaab, verse 56, the Qur’an declares that:

اِنَّ اللہَ وَمَلٰٓئِکَتَہٗ یُصَلُّوۡنَ عَلَی النَّبِیِّ ؕ یٰۤاَیُّہَا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا صَلُّوۡا عَلَیۡہِ وَ سَلِّمُوۡا تَسْلِیۡمًا ﴿۵۶﴾

“Indeed Allah and His Angels send blessings on the Prophet; O People who Believe! Send blessings and abundant salutations upon him.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Talha – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that he once presented himself in the blessed court of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. He noticed that the blessed face of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – was full of joy. He then asked, “I have never seen you so happy before as I am seeing you now.” The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “Why should I not be happy today? Just now Jibra’eel Ameen arrived and explained, “O Prophet of Allah Almighty! Whichever Ummati of yours sends one single Durood upon you, in repayment, he will be rewarded with ten noble deeds. Ten of his sins will be pardoned and he would increase in ten stages and something similar is also mentioned by the Allah Almighty”. (Musnad Imam Ahmed)

In another narration, it is mentioned that, “Allah Almighty repays the person who reads Durood Shareef with Divine Mercy and Grace as per his words (which he reads).”

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “When a person asks something from Allah Almighty and yet after this, does not read Durood upon me, then his needs are until the clouds. Then when he reads Durood upon me, his needs are fulfilled and his Du’a is also accepted and the doors of the heavens are also opened to him.”

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “He who sends a single Durood to me, Allah Almighty commands those Angels who are allocated to this that for three days they should not record any (bad deed) for this person”.

It is mentioned that on the Day of Judgement when the good and bad of a person is weighed, then a few pages would be placed on that side of the scale in which is this persons good deeds by Allah Almighty. In this way, his good deeds would be heavier that his bad. Allah Almighty will declare, “This is your Durood which you had sent on Muhammad and through this, your scale of good has become mightier. I had this saved for you.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Jaber bin Abdullah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Whoever reads Durood in the morning and evening then this person has placed the duty on the Angels who record the actions of people to record a thousand (reward) for him until the morning.” (Nuzhatul Majaalis).

It is also said that this person has fulfilled his right to his Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and Allah Almighty will pardon him and his parents and will also include them among the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and his blessed family. Ameen.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Wahb bin Mambah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that when Allah Almighty created Nabi Adam – peace be upon him, placed the soul in him and had him open his eyes, (Nabu Adam – peace be upon him) he saw written the Kalimah on the door of Jannah.

He then asked, “O Allah Have you created such a creation who is more closer to You than me?”

Allah Almighty replied, “Yes, and he is from among your offspring who is a Prophet.”

When Allah Almighty created Bibi Hawa – may Allah be pleased with her – and also placed inner feeling in Nabi Adam – peace be upon him – and he desired to marry her, then Allah Almighty declared, “You have to fulfil the rights of her Mehr”.

He asked, “What is the right of her Mehr?”

Allah Almighty replied, “You should recite Durood Shareef a hundred times on that name.”

He asked, “O Allah! If I am able to do this, will I be married to her?”

Allah Almighty replied, “Yes”.

Thereafter, Nabi Adam – peace be upon him – recited a hundred Duroods and this fulfilled the rights of Mehr of Bibi Hawa – may Allah be pleased with her. His Nikah was then performed to Bibi Hawa – may Allah be pleased with her. (Nuzhatul Majaalis)

Excellence of Durood and Salaam.

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Recite Durood upon me with love and reverence because it reaches me.” (Sunan Abu Dawud)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “On the Day of Judgement, the person close to me will be that person who recited the Durood in excess and those people who do not recite the Durood upon me in their gathering, on the Day of Judgement, this will be a testimony (against them). If Allah Almighty wishes, He will pardon them or if He wishes, He will hold them accountable.” (Jamia Tirmidi)

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “On that Day on which there will be no shadow except the Shadow of the Arsh, on that Day, three (types) of people will be under the Divine Shadow.” It was asked, “O Prophet of Allah Almighty! Who will these people be?” He declared, “That person who removed a difficulty of my Ummati, that person who revived my Sunnah and that person who recited Durood upon me in excess.” (Sharah Zarqani of the Mu’atta of Imam Malik)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “He who writes the Durood upon me in any book, as long as my name is in that book, it will seek pardon for him.” (Al Mujam Awsat)

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “He who displays respect for me as a right and recites the Durood, Allah Almighty creates an Angel whose one wing is in the East and one wing in the West. His both legs is in the seven earth and his neck is below the Arsh. Allah Almighty says to this Angel, ‘Send the Durood in the same manner as he has sent Durood on my beloved.’ Thereafter, this Angel continues to send Durood on this person until the Day of Judgement.” (Firdousul Akhbaar, Imam Daylimi)

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Without doubt, Allah Almighty pardons your sins through (your) Istighfaar. He who makes Istighfaar sincerely, he will be pardoned. He who recites the Laa ilaaha ilal laahu, his goods will become heavier and he who reads Durood upon me, on the Day of Judgement, I will be his intercessor.” (At Targheeb)

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Without doubt, Allah Almighty has stationed two Angels at my grave. When a Muslim mentions me and he recites the Durood upon me, then the Angels in reply declare, ‘May Allah Almighty pardon you.’ At the same time, the Angels of the Arsh and other Angels also mention ‘Ameen’. And he, in front of whom I am mentioned and he does not read the Durood upon me, then the two Angels declare, ‘May the Allah Almighty not pardon you.’ And the Angels who carry the Arsh and the other Angels also mention, ‘Ameen.’” (Al Mu;jam Kabeer)

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “When people are together in any gathering and they separate without reading the Durood upon me, then they leave a stench worse than a dead donkey”. (Sunan Kubra) And from that gathering in which Durood is read upon me, a sweet fragrance arises until it reaches the heavens. The Angels then declare, “This is the fragrance of that gathering in which Durood upon the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – was recited.” There is also no doubt that the fragrance of that gathering in which the Durood and Salaam was recited is to be considered as the sweetest of fragrances. The Angels immediately recognise this fragrance and this is clearly distinct from any other fragrance.

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “He who recites the Durood upon me, he will not enter Hell.” (Ar Rouad)

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has declared that, “He who recites a hundred Durood upon me, the Fire of Hell runs away from that person (at a distance of) nearly a hundred years.” (Ar Rouad)

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Those among you who recite the most of Durood, for him there will be the most of wives in Jannah.” (Ar Raoud)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Auf – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that Allah Almighty has declared that, “O Muhammad! He who recites the Durood upon you, I also send Durood upon him and he who sends the Salaam upon you, I also send Salaam upon him.” (Al Musnad Imam Ahmed bin Hambal)

He who recites the Durood Shareef aloud!

A Saint narrates, “Once, I had a sinful neighbour. I saw him in a dream and he was in Jannah. I then asked him as to how he had achieved this status. He replied, ‘I once presented myself in a gathering of Dhikr and I also heard a comment of a certain Muhaddith who mentioned that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, ‘he who recites the Durood aloud for the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him-, then for him Jannah becomes Waajib.’ After saying this, this Muhaddith also began to read the Durood aloud and the entire gathering including myself also read the Durood aloud, Allah Almighty had pardoned us on that same day.” (Fadaa’il Durood and Salaam)

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “One day, Jibra’eel Ameen presented himself to me and said, ‘O Muhammad! I have brought such glad tidings to you which prior to you, I have never brought and nor will I in the future. It is this that the Allah Almighty states, ‘O beloved! Whichever Ummati of yours recites the Durood three times upon you, if he is standing then before he sits and if he is sitting then before he stands, he is pardoned.’” When the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – heard this news, he performed the Sajdah of Shukr.

It is reported that once a lady saw her son in his grave and he was being punished. She obviously became extremely sad by this. She also began to plead and weep. On the second occasion, she saw her son surrounded by mercy and Nur and she asked him the reason. He replied, “A person passed by this graveyard and he recited a Durood upon the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and also conveyed the reward to all the people of the cemetery and through the Barakah of this, Allah Almighty had also pardoned me.”

A certain Aarif explains that, “Once, while I was reading Salaah, in the Tashahhud, I had forgotten to read the Durood upon the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him-. I then felt extremely sleepy and I fell off to sleep. In a dream, I saw the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and he said to me, “Today, you have forgotten to recite the Durood upon me?” I replied, “O Prophet of Allah Almighty! I was busy in praising the Allah Almighty.”

He replied, “Are you not aware that by not reading Durood upon me, even Allah Almighty does not accept His Divine Praise. He does not accept such a Du’a in which the Durood has not been sent to me and no need (of anyone) is fulfilled as long as the Durood is not sent on me. Have you not heard the Divine Command of Allah Almighty which is, “Send blessings and abundant salutations upon him.”

His face became bright!

Hadrat Sayyiduna Sufyan Thouri – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates:

During the Tawaaf of the Ka’ba, I saw a person who kept reading the Durood at every step. I then asked him, “You are continuing to read the Durood instead of other Dhikr, what is the reason behind this?”

He replied, “May Allah Almighty forgive you, who are you?”

I then informed him that I was Sufyan Thouri.

He then said, “If you were someone who was not known in this era, then I would not have revealed this secret to you. Once, I travelled with my father to perform Hajj. During this journey, my father became very ill and I stopped awhile so that I could take care of him. However, while I was treating him, he passed away. As I stood near his head, his face suddenly became black and when I saw this, I immediately recited ‘Inna lil laahi.’ I then placed a shawl over his face. Suddenly I felt extreme drowsiness and I fell asleep. I saw a person who was so handsome and good looking that I had never seen someone like this before. His clothing were extremely clean and pure and from him, such a sweet fragrance appeared which I had never experienced before. He then walked forward until he reached my father. He removed the covering from the face of my father and ran his hands over the face of my father. Suddenly, the face of my father became bright. This person then turned around and began to walk away and I grabbed his clothing and asked him, “May Allah Almighty shower His Divine Mercy on you, who are you through whom the Allah Almighty has performed a great favour upon my father in this barrenness?”

He then asked me, “Do you not recognize me? I am the one on whom the Qur’an was revealed, I am Muhammad bin Abdullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. Your father was a sinful person but he also used to read the Durood in abundance upon me. When he became ill, he also called out to me and without doubt, that person who reads the Durood in abundance, I most certainly come to his aid.” I then awoke and saw that the face of my father was full of brightness. (Tafseer Ruhul Bayaan)

There is immense respect and stature for that person who reads the Durood.

O Muslims! Increase your recital of the Durood. There is no doubt that through this, one’s major sins are pardoned and we are guided on the right path. The person who recites the Durood is protected against the Fire of Hell and he is entitled for the eternal blessings of Jannah.

In one narration it is mentioned that for a person who recites the Durood, there are ten forms of respect.

  1. He achieves the Divine Mercy of Allah Almighty
  2. He receives the intercession of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him
  3. He is like the Angels in this act.
  4. He becomes an enemy of the disbelievers and Munaafiqs.
  5. His sins and transgressions are pardoned.
  6. His needs are fulfilled.
  7. His inner and outer being is brightened.
  8. He is safe from Hell.
  9. He is able to enter Jannah.
  10. He achieves the Divine Tidings of Allah Almighty. (Ar Rouad)

O Allah! send Divine Mercy upon Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. That blessed being who is the most supreme and lofty of creation. That special being who called others towards Islam and guidance and guided us towards the path to Jannah. O Allah Almighty Who is the Lord of the Universe, send Durood upon him on our behalf as You have commanded us to send Durood upon him.

O Allah! Let us arise in the company of Your beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him-. Allow us to live in the company of those who follow him. Allow us to follow the Shari’ah and the Sunnah and also the path of the blessed Ashaab.

O Allah! Allow us to be present at the fountain of Kauther so that we could be blessed with the vision of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. Allow us to be blessed with his intercession and allow us to join him in Jannah. Ameen.
