It is reported that one day, Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’ruf Kharkhi – may Allah be pleased with him – was walking in the market place. He also met a group of people who were busy consuming alcohol. These people appeared in a very disrespectful manner in front of the great Saint. His Mureeds who were with him also asked him to curse these people so that they can receive immediate punishment.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’ruf Kharkhi – may Allah be pleased with him – then picked up his hand and the Mureeds waited for him to curse these people. They also knew that this was one of those special Saints whose Du’a was immediately accepted. However, when Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’ruf Kharkhi – may Allah be pleased with him – began to make Du’a, all of them were extremely surprised. In fact the great Saint with extreme sincerity began to make Du’a in the following words, “O Allah Almighty as you have made these people happy and joyous in this world, in like manner also make them happy and joyous in the Hereafter.”

When Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’ruf Kharkhi – may Allah be pleased with him – completed this Du’a, everyone could see that these same people began to break their containers and started to tremble with extreme fear. They then approached the great Saint and made sincere Taubah. They also pleaded for his pardon. Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’ruf Kharkhi – may Allah be pleased with him – then turned to his Mureeds and declared, “This has been the result of the Du’a, both objectives have been achieved. They have sought pardon for their evil ways and they will also no longer drink alcohol”. In other words, both parties have become happy and satisfied. (Risaale Qushayriyyah)

One day Hadrat Sayyiduna Zun Nun Misri – may Allah be pleased with him – was sitting in a boat travelling somewhere. At that moment, another boat was also approaching them which was also filled with people. These people were playing and joking and also enjoying themselves with various musical instruments. When his Mureeds saw these people, they said to him, “Hadrat, please curse these people so that others can be saved from their mischief and fasaad.”

However, Hadrat Sayyiduna Zun Nun Misri – may Allah be pleased with him – picked up his hands and made Du’a, “O Allah Almighty! As you have blessed these people with a good life in this world also grace them with a good life in the Hereafter.”

Obviously, his Mureeds were shocked when they heard this Du’a. At that moment also, the other boat came near their boat and when these people saw Hadrat Sayyiduna Zun Nun Misri – may Allah be pleased with him, they immediately made Taubah and threw all their musical instruments in the water. Hadrat Sayyiduna Zun Nun Misri – may Allah be pleased with him – then mentioned to his Mureeds, “A good life in the Hereafter is dependent on the Taubah that a person makes in this world. You can see that everyone has achieved his objective. You and these people have also achieved whatever you wanted. And no harm has been caused to anyone.”

These words of the great Saint is the perfect example of the manner in which the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – used to behave with people. As much as they caused difficulty and oppression to him, so much so, he made Du’a for them in the following words, “O Allah! Pardon my people because they are unaware of me.” (Khashful Mahjub)
