It is reported that there was once a person who used to live near Hadrat Shaikh Haji Shareef Zindani – may Allah be pleased with him. He extremely poor and he always used to worry about being able to afford the marriage of his seven daughters. One day he approached the great Saint and informed him of his personal stress. The Saint mentioned to him, “As much trouble you face today, so much of comfort you will face tomorrow.”

He requested Hadrat Shaikh Haji Shareef Zindani – may Allah be pleased with him – to keep a special watch over him and that he wanted the Saint to make a special Du’a for him to be able to fulfil this great responsibility.

However, at that moment, Hadrat Shaikh Haji Shareef Zindani – may Allah be pleased with him had nothing to give him and told him to come the next day. As this poor person returned home, he met a fire-worshipper on the way and this person asked him where he was coming from and who he had gone to visit. He mentioned the entire cause of his concern to this fire-worshipper and also mentioned that the Saint had informed him to come the next day. The fire-worshipper replied, “My friend, Hadrat Shaikh is someone who needs help himself. What can he be able to give you and by telling you to come tomorrow, he was merely making a feeble excuse. Go and inform him that if he works for me for the next seven years and does as he is told, I will myself give you seven thousand Dinaars.”

This poor person then returned to the great Saint and informed him about what the fire- worshipper had told him.

When the great Saint heard this, he replied, “Glory be to Allah what better solution can this be? After all, by serving someone else, at least the state of a poor person will be improved.”

Hadrat Shaikh Haji Shareef Zindani – may Allah be pleased with him – then took this poor person to the fire-worshipper and whatever the fire-worshipper told him, he readily accepted the condition. This person then went to the Qadi of the local town and this placed this agreement in writing. Hadrat Shaikh Haji Shareef Zindani – may Allah be pleased with him – then handed this seven thousand Dinaars to the poor person so that he could arrange for the marriage of his seven daughters. He also presented himself to the fire-worshipper to serve him for the next seven years. The fire-worshipper then allocated whatever work he needed to do and the Saint busied himself in this work.

However, the Khalifah was also someone who greatly admired Hadrat Shaikh Haji Shareef Zindani – may Allah be pleased with him – and when he heard what had happened, he immediately sent fourteen thousand Dinaars to the great Saint. He informed him that he should give the fire- worshipper the seven thousand Dinaars so that he could remove himself from this agreement and he was also to keep the other seven thousand for his own personal need.

When Hadrat Shaikh Haji Shareef Zindani – may Allah be pleased with him – received this, he gave all away in charity to the poor and needy and mentioned that since he had made a promise to serve this fire-worshipper, he was not going to break that promise.

When the fire-worshipper heard about this, he asked the great Saint, “O Shaikh! When the Khalifah himself has freed you from this agreement, why do you not take advantage from this and spare yourself the trouble and stress of working for me?”

The great Saint replied, “What do you know about the pleasure I receive from this sacrifice. My striving and poverty is liked by Allah and whatever pleases my Creator also pleases me. Allah Almighty certainly loves those who make others happy and He bestows immense reward upon them.”

When the fire-worshipper heard these words, it had a great impact on. He then said to Hadrat Shaikh Haji Shareef Zindani – may Allah be pleased with him, “Hadrat! I have also voluntarily freed you from this agreement. Please leave so that you can continue to serve Allah Almighty”.

When Hadrat Shaikh Haji Shareef Zindani – may Allah be pleased with him – heard this, he replied, “When you have freed me, then I make Du’a that Allah Almighty also free you from the Fire of Hell.”

As he mentioned these words, the heart of the fire-worshipper suddenly turned towards Islam. He immediately made Taubah and read the Kalimah and became a Muslim. He also divorced himself form all wordily activities and began to serve the great Saint for the rest of his life. (Sayrul Aqtaab)

It is mentioned that three days after Hadrat Sayyiduna Baba Fareed – may Allah be pleased with him – had arrived in Dehli from Haansi, a very old friend and disciple of his acme to visit him. However, such was the crowd and amount of people waiting to meet the great Saint, that this poor person was not given the opportunity of even seeing the great Saint. However, eventually when he had forced himself into the inner circle of the great Saint, he fell at the feet of the great Saint and said, “When you were in Haansi, we used to easily be able to visit and kiss your feet, but in this place, poor people like me have no chance at all.”

When Hadrat Sayyiduna Baba Fareed – may Allah be pleased with him – heard these words, he felt extremely sad and also understood that perhaps this was an unseen message for him to leave this city. He immediately informed everyone present that he was leaving for Haansi. However, the inner circle of people informed him that he was placed in this position by his spiritual master, Hadrat Shaikh Qutbudeen Bakhtiyar Khaki – may Allah be pleased with him, and that he should not leave this city. However, Hadrat Sayyiduna Baba Fareed – may Allah be pleased with him –replied, “My Spiritual Master has already conveyed to me what was to be conveyed. Now, whether I stay in a city or a village, he is always with me.” (Sayrul Awliya)
