Download PDF: [S] The Amazing Wings of the Angels
There is no doubt that Allah azza wajal has created wings for the Angels through which they are able to fly around the universe carrying out the Divine Command of Allah azza wajal. Some of them have two wings, some three and some even four wings.
Allama Zamakhshari explains that in some books it is mentioned that there are some Angels who actually have six shoulders and six wings. It is said that they conceal their body with two wings, two wings are used to fly with and two wings are used to conceal their faces in extreme fear and humility for Allah azza wajal.
In the Hadith Shareef, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam states that at the place called Sidratul Muntaha, he saw Jibra’eel Ameen who had six hundred shoulders with wings on them.
In the Hadith Shareef, it is mentioned that once Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam requested Jibra’eel Ameen to reveal his original form and that he should appear in this form at least once when bringing the Divine Revelation of Allah azza wajal. Jibraeel Ameen replied that this would indeed be very mighty on Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam. However, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam insisted.
When Jibra’eel Ameen appeared in this form, a great sense of surprise overtook Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam. Jibra’eel Ameen placed his hands on the shoulders of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam and on his blessed chest. Jibra’eel Ameen then informed him that if he had seen Hadrat Israfeel ‘Alayhis Salaam, he would have been even more surprised. He mentioned that Allah azza wajal had blessed Hadrat Israfeel ‘Alayhis Salaam with twelve thousand shoulders with wings on them. His one wing was in the West and one in the East and that he was also holding the Divine Arsh on his shoulders. (Tafseer Saawi, 3/254).
In Surah Fatir in the first ruku, the description of the Angels and their wings are also mentioned. Without doubt, Allah azza wajal has Power over all things.
To believe in the existence of the Angels is also considered as an essential belief in Islam. It is also essential to bring Imaan on the different descriptions of the Angels as mentioned in various materials. The question which arises is why there are so many Angels and what the need for so many Angels is. The Qur’an has clearly informed us that there is no limit to the Divine Power of Allah azza wajal. He is able to do anything and all this is part of His Divine Power. To question the existence of Angels also opens the door of ignorance and heresy. What are their exact numbers, what are some of their unique qualities and descriptions, all of this is known to Allah azza wajal and what He has revealed to His beloved Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam. Our duty is merely to bring Imaan on all of this.
