Hadrat Sayyiduna Aamir bin Abdullah bin Jarrah bin Hilal Qarashi Fehri – may Allah be pleased with him – is among the “Ash’arah Mubashirah”. He is famously known as Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah – may Allah be pleased with him. He participated in all the battles of Islam and he was also one of the blessed companions who also took part in the first migration to Abyssinia. About him, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “In every Ummah, there is an Ameen, and the Ameen of this Ummah is Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah.”
It is mentioned that when Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah – may Allah be pleased with him – was the Governor of Syria, he was visited by Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him. When the great Muslim leader saw the simplicity and humility of this Governor of an entire country, he mentioned, “The world has changed all of us O Abu Ubaidah except you. You have protected yourself against the world.”
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah – may Allah be pleased with him -passed away in the great plague in 18 A.H. and his Janazah Salaah was performed by another eminent Muslim leader, namely, Hadrat Sayyiduna Mu’az bin Jabal – may Allah be pleased with him.
It is reported that when Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – travelled to Baitul Muqaddas to accept the keys to the city, in a show of welcoming him, the streets were lined with people.
As for the Muslim army under the banner of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah – may Allah be pleased with him, the four battalions of the Muslim army had come to a place called Jaabiyah to meet him.
When Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – reached there, he declared, “La ilaaha illal laa. We are a nation whom Allah has blessed with respect because of Islam. If we chose another path to achieve respect besides Islam, then Allah Almighty will disgrace and humiliate us.” (Mustadarak by Imam Haakim; At Targheeb wat Tarheeb)
Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then asked the army to disband and go to another place. He decided to walk alone with immense humility. When the Muslim leaders came near him, he asked, “Please separate from me. Where is my brother Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah?”
When Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah – may Allah be pleased with him – approached the great Muslim leader, they both embraced each other warmly and wept for a long time. He then asked, “O Ubaidah! On the Day of Judgement, when Allah Almighty will ask what did we do after the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – what answer will we give?”
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah – may Allah be pleased with him – then asked him to choose another path of entry into this city so that people will not notice them weeping. The eyes of everyone was on them. The entire Muslim army followed them with their eyes as well as the entire population that lived in Jerusalem. Famous commanders in the Muslim army stood humbly on one side looking at these two humble but great companions of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him –in silence while they wept in fear of Allah Almighty.
This incident of the arrival of the blessed Ashaab in the city of Jerusalem and the Baitul Muqaddas has been explained and described in numerous books of history.
When we look at the disgrace which has come to the Muslim Ummah around the world, we need to study the words of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – very carefully. There is no doubt that one of the greatest reasons for this humiliation is that the majority of Muslims are not living according to what Islam has taught has. There is a promise in these words that if you live as true Muslims, then there will only be honour and success for you in both worlds. But if you do not practise sincerely on Islam, there will only be dishonour and disgrace which awaits you.
Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – had clearly mentioned that “respect is only gained through Islam” and how is it that we are so disgraced and humiliated in this world? The answer is plain for everyone to see. We can say that most Muslims in the present age are just “wannabe” Muslims. Muslims are been slaughtered in Myanmar, in Syria, in Kashmir, in various parts of Europe, Asia and Africa, and we keep silent. Now and then we have a large march and shout slogans and the world looks at us and laugh. We display no socio-economic plan to do anything.
We scream about education, but allow our children to be brainwashed by Western education. We have the financial resources to do something, but think that we should keep it to ourselves because it’s coming to the grave with us, Ma’azallah. We believe that politics is separate from Islam which proves we know nothing about Islam. True Islam gave birth to true politics, true science, true social remedies and true economic ideas. But we think that the true mission of Islam is to sit in a Masjid the entire day and talk about Islam instead of doing anything about Islam. We believe that the wealth we have belongs to us, but fail to realise that on the Day of Judgement, Allah Almighty will ask, “what did you do with My Bounties?”
