It is reported that once, Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Adham – may Allah be pleased with him – was in the blessed city of Mecca Shareef. He noticed that a person was purchasing sweet meat and two pieces of this fell from his parcel to the ground. Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Adham – may Allah be pleased with him – picked up these two pieces of sweet meat and consumed it without thinking.
He then went to Baitul Muqaddas. There is a small area in Baitul Muqaddas which was said to hang in the air and on top of this area, there was also a small dome. It was also a practise in that area that whoever was in this area, they had to leave this area after Asr so that this area could be occupied by the Angels the entire night. Everyone who was there, then left this sacred area. However, Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Adham – may Allah be pleased with him – remained behind by hiding himself.
When the Angels arrived, they began to speak among themselves. One Angel said to the next, “I can sense a human within this place.”
The other replied, “Yes, it is Ebrahim bin Adham, the great worshipper from Khuraasan.”
The other Angel replied that yes, it was certainly him.
The first then said. “Is this the same Ebrahim whose actions every day raises itself to the heavens and it is immediately accepted?”
The other Angel replied, “Yes, however, for one year now, his actions are stopped from entering the heavens and in this period also, his Du’a is not accepted. The reason is that he had eaten two pieces of sweet meat without permission.”
After saying this, these Angels busied themselves in Ibadah until the morning.
In the morning when the person in charge arrived, he opened the door and silently Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Adham – may Allah be pleased with him – left for Mecca Shareef. He then went to a shop which was selling sweetmeat. He noticed that there was a young man who was in charge of the shop. He then asked him, “Last year, there was an old man at this shop, where can I find him?”
The young man replied that this was his father and that he had passed away. Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Adham – may Allah be pleased with him – then related the entire incident to him. The young man replied that of the two pieces of sweetmeat, he had pardoned him his share, however, he had to also seek the forgiveness of his mother and sister who were also joint owners of this sweetmeat.
Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim bin Adham – may Allah be pleased with him – then went to their house and again related the entire incident to them. The old lady mentioned that she had also pardoned him her share as well. And thereafter, the young lady also mentioned that she had pardoned him, her share as well.
When he arrived in Baitul Muqaddas and entered this private area, the same night, he heard both these Angels saying, “This is Ebrahim bin Adham, for one year, his good deeds has not been allowed to enter the heavens and neither has his Du’a been accepted. However, since the day he had sought forgiveness for his actions, from that day, his daily deeds and actions enter the heaven and his Du’a is also now accepted. Almighty Allah has also once again returned to him his eminent status and position.”
When the great Saint heard these words, he was obviously extremely happy and it is said that thereafter, he waited so patiently for his sustenance that he only made Iftaar after every seven days making sure that the food was Halaal and had been acquired in a Halaal manner. (Nawaadir – Al Qalyubi)
