It is mentioned that once a person appeared in the blessed court of Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’ruf Kharkhi – may Allah be pleased with him – and complained about his poverty. The great Saint replied, “May Allah Almighty keep you in his Divine Protection. Return to your family and continue to read the words, ‘Ma shaa Allahu kaana’.”
This person then returned to his house. As he reached his house, he could see someone riding towards him with great speed. As this person approached him, he ordered him to wait. This person on the horse then handed him a pouch and went back. The friend of this poor person then asked him to look inside the pouch. When he looked inside, he found that it was full of Dinaars. He then said to his friend, “Come let us go to the blessed court of Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’ruf Kharkhi and reveal the entire incident to him”.
As they entered the court of the great Saint, he mentioned to them that there was no need to have returned and that their need had been fulfilled. He also made further Du’a for them and mentioned that as they return home, they should continue reading this. (Uyunul Hikaayah)
We also learn from this that if we have problems and issues which are beyond our control, we should visit the pious of this Ummah to seek solutions. There is no doubt that Muslims in the past used to practise upon this. Another important point to bear in mind is that this is one of the most eminent Saints and scholars of his era and he did not mention to this person that he should ask Allah Almighty directly. Or he did not mention to him that his behaviour was Shirk or Bid’ah.
It reminds one of a story which is attributed to Hadrat Sayyiduna Baba Fareed – may Allah be pleased with him. A person once came to Hadrat Sayyiduna Baba Fareed – may Allah be pleased with him – and complained that he had a severe headache. The great Saint then read Surah Fatiha and blew on this person. Immediately, his headache disappeared. As this person was returning home, he thought to himself that this would be a good way to make money. He then announced to everyone that if anyone had a headache, they should come to him. However, when the first person went to him and he read the Surah Fatiha, instead of the headache disappearing, his headache became even worse than before.
When this so called ‘bawa’ returned to Hadrat Baba Fareed – may Allah be pleased with him – and complained about what was happening. The great Saint replied that the first thing he should do is create a tongue like Hadrat Baba Fareed and then he should read the Surah Fatiha. In other words, when people visit these Saints, they have the firm belief that these are special servants of Allah Almighty and when they make Du’a for someone it is accepted immediately.
