Imam Asma’e – may Allah be pleased with him, who is considered a great authority on Arabic language, was once near the Ka’ba on a moonlit night. He saw a very handsome young man who was holding the Khilaf of the Ka’ba. This young man was weeping and making a very sincere Du’a while tightly holding the Khilaf of the Ka’ba. The young man was making Du’a in the following words: “O Allah! Everyone is asleep and even the sun has set. But you are certainly the All Living, All Powerful. Everyone leaves guard at their door, but Your Divine Door is always open. O Allah! I am a sinful person. I am a poor person. I am an orphan, I am someone who is imprisoned. I am standing at your Divine Court seeking Your Divine Mercy.” This young man then began to weep even more.

This young man fell on the ground and Imam Asma’e – may Allah be pleased with him – then ran towards him to hold him up. Imam Asma’e – may Allah be pleased with him – continues, “As I held his head, I also began to weep and as soon as my tears fell on his blessed face, he regained consciousness and asked who it was and who that had come in between him and His Creator.

“I replied, ‘O my master! This is your servant Asma’e. Why are you crying so much? You are from the blessed Ahle Bait. Pertaining to the greatness of the Ahle Bait, the Allah Almighty has also declared in Surah Al Ahzab, verse 33:

اِنَّمَا یُرِیۡدُ اللہُ لِیُـذْہِبَ عَنۡکُمُ الرِّجْسَ اَہۡلَ الْبَیۡتِ وَ یُطَہِّرَکُمْ تَطْہِیۡرًا ﴿ۚ۳۳﴾

“Allah only wills to remove all impurity from you, O the People of the Household, and by cleansing you make you utterly pure.”

“When he heard these words, he replied, ‘O Asma’e! Are you not aware that Allah Almighty has created Jannah for everyone and for those who obey Him even if it is a black slave. And He has created Hell for those who disobey Him even if that person is from the Quraish or even a king. Have you not read the in Surah Muminun, 101:

فَاِذَا نُفِخَ فِی الصُّوۡرِ فَلَاۤ اَنۡسَابَ بَیۡنَہُمْ یَوْمَئِذٍ وَّ لَا یَتَسَآءَلُوۡنَ ﴿۱۰۱﴾

‘So when the Trumpet is blown – so there will neither be any relationship among them that day, nor will they ask about one another.’

From this incident, we can clearly come to understand the immense stature and eminence of this great Imam, Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Zainul Aabideen – may Allah be pleased with him. How great was his fear for the Allah Almighty!

There is also no doubt that his blessed personality was a symbol of the blessed grace of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Zainul Aabideen – may Allah be pleased with him – was also a symbol of guidance and righteousness. He was also the greatest member of the blessed family in his era. Even though we all know that this was that person who was symbol of beauty for those who worshipped the Allah Almighty, yet such humility is being displayed in the Divine Court of Allah Almighty.

This is also a great lesson for those people today who call themselves the Sadaat or Sayeds. There are also people who continue to boast and mention to everyone that they are from the family of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. Some of them even boast in pride like other individuals are lessor creation or lessor beings. If only these people can learn from such great people as Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Zainul Aabideen – may Allah be pleased with him. This was a symbol of sincerity and caring for other Muslims. Yet, there are certain people in the present era who call themselves great Sayeds but they have no knowledge or any character whatsoever.

We have already come to know about his great qualities. Another amazing quality of Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Zainul Aabideen – may Allah be pleased with him – is that whether he was stationed anywhere or even while on travel, he never missed his Tahajjud Salaah. Every day, he performed nearly a thousand rak’ah of Nafil Salaah. Twice in his blessed life time, he took all of his wealth and gave it in the Path of Allah Almighty. Another greatness of the Imam was that he used to help a lot of people without them knowing where help was coming from. Only after he had passed away, did they realise where the help actually came from. Such was his Ibadah that this title of “Zainul Aabideen” was unanimously given to him by the Ummah. (Ruhani Hikaayah)
