Commentary of “Mustafa Jaane Rahmat” Salam – Verse No. 36, 37, 38

Who karam ki ghata gesuwe mushk sa

Lakka-e-abre rahmat pe laakhon Salaam

Each strand of your hair is fragrant as musk and a shade of Mercy

Millions of peace be upon that Merciful shade
Lailatul Qadr me matla’il fajr haq

Maang ki isteqaamat pe laakhon Salaam

The center-path of your hair appears as “the rise of Fajr” in “the night of Qadr”

Millions of peace be upon the straightness of the center-path

Lakht lakhte dil-e-har jigar chaak se

Shaana karne ki haalat pe laakhon Salaam

As he styles his hair every portion of the heart sends

Millions of peace be upon his style of combing hair

The Merciful Shade of His Hair:

The blessed hair of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – were neither very stiff and straight nor very curly but rather moderate and soft, and formed beautiful locks.

Hazrat Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – describe the beauty of his hair in the following words:

کَانَ رَسُوْلُ اللّٰہِ ﷺ حَسَنَ الشَّعْرِ

The Messenger of Allah – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – had beautiful hair,

(Tahdheeb Ibn Asakir, Vol. 1, p. 317)

The Colour of His Hair

Hazrat Abu Qersaafah – may Allah be pleased with him – describes his hair colour as follows:

کَانَ رَسُوْلُ اللّٰہِ ﷺ شَدِیْدَ السِّوَادِ الشِّعْر

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – had extremely black hair.

(Tahdheeb Ibn Asakir, Vol. 1, p. 317)

Hazrat Abu al-Tufail – may Allah be pleased with him – used to say that if anyone has anything to ask about the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – then ask me, for there is no one alive on earth who has seen him besides me.

Whenever anyone enquired from him about the description of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – he would describe in great detail and at the end he would say that he still remembers his last vision at the conquest of Makkah:

مَا أَنْسَى شِدَّةَ بَيَاضِ وَجْهِهِ مَعَ شِدَّةِ سَوَادِ شَعْرِهِ

I still remember the fairness of his face and the dark blackness of his hair.

(Ibn Asakir, Vol. 1, p. 317)

Hazrat Hassaan Ibn Thaabit – may Allah be pleased with him – said the following verse about the blessed hair of the beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him:

اَلصُّبْحُ بَدَا مِنْ طَلْعَتِہٖ

وَاللَّیْلُ دَجٰی مِنْ وَفْرَتِہٖ

The morning derives light from his glorious face

And the night derives its darkness from his black locks

Hazrat Abu Qataadah – may Allah be pleased with him – asked Hazrat Anas – may Allah be pleased with him:

کَیْفَ کَانَ شَعْرُرَسُوْلِ اللّٰہِ ﷺ

How was the hair of Allah’s Messenger – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him?

The were neither curly nor straight but rather slightly wavy.

(Shamaail al-Tirmidhi)

Hazrat Hind ibn Abi Hala – may Allah be pleased with him – describes that his head was moderately proportionate and hairs were slightly wavy and if the path was formed by itself then he would leave it but did not make an effort to make a path between them.  When his hair grew longer they would exceed slightly below his earlobes.

(ibid)

Sometimes his hair would reach the shoulder as the Hadeeth of Sahih Muslim suggests:

His hair would touch his shoulders.
