Hadrat Sayyiduna Malik bin Dinar Radi Allahu ‘Anhu narrates:

“Once, I decided to visit Sayyidah Rabi’a Basariyyah Radi Allahu ‘Anha. I noticed that she only possessed a broken jug made from clay. She also used this to carry water to make Wudu and also drank from this jug. She had a very old mat. There was a stone pillow on it which she rested on. When I saw this poor and simple life of hers, I asked, ‘I have many friends who are rich and powerful and if you give me permission, I can ask them for some items.’

“Sayyidah Rabi’a Radi Allahu ‘Anha then asked me, ‘Is it not correct that the same Divine Being also bestows sustenance upon me and these rich and powerful people?’ I replied, ‘Yes, there is no doubt in this.’

“She then declared, ‘Is it possible that this Divine Being has forgotten the poor and destitute because of their poverty and only remembers the rich and powerful when giving sustenance to anyone?’

“I replied that this was not possible. She then said, ‘When that Divine Being is aware of the needs of everyone, then what is the purpose of reminding Him? We should be content with whatever is His Divine Pleasure.’” (Tadkiratul Awliyah, 56)

This fact has been mentioned in the Qur’an on different occasions. In Surah Nisaa, verse 94, Allah Almighty declares:

‘O believers! When you march forth for a crusade then make proper investigation and he who greets you, say not to him, ‘you are not Muslim, you seek the goods of living world, then with Allah there are spoils abundant. You too were such before, then Allah conferred His favour on you; so you are duty bound to investigate. Undoubtedly, Allah is aware of what you do.

In Surah Baqarah, verse 74, He declares:

Then, thereafter your hearts hardened, then they are like stones, but harder than these; and of stones there are some from which rivers gush forth and some are those which split, then water comes therefrom and there are some which fall down for fear of Allah, and Allah is not unmindful of your doings.

In Surah Nisaa, verse 40, He declares:

Allah does not do injustice even to the weight of an atom, and if there be a good deed, He doubles it and gives from Himself immense reward.

In Surah Ale Imran, verse 74, He states:

He singles out with His mercy whomsoever He pleases; and Allah is of exceeding bounty.

In Surah Anfal, verse 69:

Then eat of what you have obtained as spoil of war, lawful and pure, and remain fearing Allah. Verily Allah is  Forgiving, Merciful.

All of these verses clearly inform us that Allah Almighty is certainly not unaware of everything that His creation does. He is able to see everything and is fully aware of everything. Allah Almighty is Generous and is also Independent of His creation.

In spite of this, if a person finds himself in difficulty, then this is not because Allah Almighty has caused oppression on the person because Allah Almighty is certainly not an oppressor and He is certainly not oblivious of that person state.

This also proves that if there is difficulty which is experienced by someone, then perhaps there is some Divine Grace hidden in this which people are unaware of. It is obvious that the mind and intellect of people are unable to fathom His Divine Wisdom.

Therefore, when we come to understand that there is certainly some Divine Wisdom behind this, then how can we complain about Allah’s Almighty Divine Pleasure and His Divine Decree?

There is no doubt that to remain silent about His Divine Decree is something which people should consider as a blessing.
