Download PDF: Pardah at the time of Burial

It is reported that when the time came for Sayyidah Bibi Fatimah May Allah be pleased with her to leave this world, she mentioned to Sayyidah Asma binte Umais May Allah be pleased with her, “I extremely dislike a Janazah which is open, because in this case, the female also becomes apparent.”

Sayyidah Asma May Allah be pleased with her mentioned that she had seen a certain method in Abyssinia and she described this method to the blessed lady. She then took a few branches and tied pieces of material around it and it became like a closed area. When the blessed lady saw this, she was extremely happy. Sayyidah Bibi Fatimah May Allah be pleased with her then instructed everyone that her Janazah should also be carried in this manner and after her, the Janazah of Sayyidah Zainab May Allah be pleased with her was also carried in this fashion. (Usdul Ghaabah, 524)

There is no doubt that modesty and Pardah is among the beautiful traits of a female. One who displays such modesty is also one who is respected and also one who saves themselves from all fitnah.

In the present age, our Muslim sisters consider Pardah and modesty to be nothing but a burden and a means of oppression. As a matter of fact, some of the Western powers have even bought a few “Muslim females” and given them the money and support to go on the streets and scream about the “oppression” of Islam upon the females.

Some of these despicable females have also appeared on national TV channels and shouted in public that Islam is an oppressive religion because it demands its females to wear a proper covering when in public and also demands that its females should display modesty.

We would like to ask these modern females as to when did Islam force you to do this? Remember that whatever you do is for your own good. If you are modest in public and dress in an Islamic manner, you do not make Islam rich or powerful, in fact you are doing no favour to Islam. If you disobey the rules of Islam and appear naked in public, still too, you do no damage to Islam!  Whatever you do, you are doing it for yourself. If you obey Islam, you will still have to face your Creator Almighty and if you disobey Islam, you will still have to face your Creator Almighty. Therefore, it is up to you to choose how you would like to face Him. Islam has never forced anyone to do anything.
