Download PDF: Keeping the Name “Muhammad”
Hadrat Abul Abbas bin Ahmed Radi Allahu ‘Anhu narrates that there was once a female in the city of Faas. She had a special habit that whenever any problems and trial came to her, she used to place both her hands over her eyes and declare, “Muhammad May Allah send peace and blessings upon him.” With the Barakah of this, Allah Almighty used to remove her ills and troubles.
It is reported that when she passed away, a close relative of hers saw her in a dream and asked her whether she had seen the two Angels Munkar and Nakeer in her grave. She replied, “Yes, they did approach me. However, the moment I saw them, I placed my hands over my eyes and uttered, ‘Muhammad May Allah send peace and blessings upon him.’ When I opened my eyes, there was no sign of them in my grave.” (Shawaahidul Haq, 744)
Lesson
There is no doubt that Allah Almighty has certainly placed immense Barakah and reward in the blessed being of the Holy Prophet May Allah send peace and blessings upon him, and in the same manner, He has also placed immense Barakah in his blessed name as well. As his blessed being is also without fault, in like manner, is his blessed name.
There are many famous statements which have been made by the Holy Prophet May Allah send peace and blessings upon him about the importance and virtue of the name “Muhammad.” the Holy Prophet May Allah send peace and blessings upon him said:
- If a son is born to someone and because of love and reverence for me and because of attaining Barakah from my name, he keeps (the name of this child) ‘Mohammed,’ then this person and his son will both enter Jannah. (ibn Asaakir)
- On the Day of Judgement, two people will enter the Divine Court of Allah Almighty. It will be commanded, “Allow both of them to enter Jannah.” However, they will reply, “O Allah Almighty, we did not perform such deeds which would allow us to enter Jannah, and therefore, how did we become entitled to Jannah?” Allah Almighty will declare, “Enter Jannah because I have a promise that whoevers name is ‘Mohammed’ or ‘Ahmed’ will not enter Hell.” (Hafiz ibn Kabeer)
- Allah Almighty has declared to me, “I swear by My Divine Respect and Awe that whoevers name is like your name, I will not punish them with the punishment of Hell.” (Hulyatul Awliyah)
- Around whichever table people are sitting and eating and there is someone named ‘Mohammed’ or ‘Ahmed’ among them, then these people will be blessed twice every day. (Musnadul Firdous)
The eminent scholars of Islam have also mentioned a few statements in this regard and we will present two of them.
Abu Shu’aib Haraafi reports from Imam Ataa that whoever wishes that the child born should be a boy, then he should place his hand on the stomach of his wife and say:
“If this child born is a boy, his name will be ‘Mohammed.’” In Sha Allah, the child will be a boy. (Fatawah Imam Shamsudeen Sakhaawi)
Sayyiduna Imam Malik Radi Allahu ‘Anhu states that, “In that house in which there is a person whose name is ‘Mohammed,’ there is a lot of Barakah in that house.” (Sharah Al Mawaahib, Imam Zarqani)
Note: If one keeps the name ‘Mohammed’ then one is also allowed to keep another name for calling purposes such as ‘Bilal’, etc. The reason is that it is sometimes difficult to maintain the same respect when calling out the name ‘Mohammed.’
There is no doubt that our eminent ‘Ulama knew the many excellences of this name and they were not stingy in educating people about this fact as we have seen from these few statements.
In like manner, we should also be aware of the Barakah of this name and also make sure that we encourage our family and others of the benefit of this blessed name. However, at the same time, if one finds difficulty in certain issues, he should not start to blame the blessed name but should find fault in his own behaviour and being.
Allah Allah Almighty give all Muslims sisters and brothers the strength to maintain and follow Islam. Aameen.
