Download PDF: [S] To Remain in a State of Dhikr
Hadrat Sayyiduna Hanzalah – may Allah be pleased with him – was among those who recorded the Holy Qur’an. He narrates:
I once met Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – and he asked me, “O Hanzalah! How are you?” (This was in reference to his state of Imaan).
I replied, “Hanzalah has become a Munafiq.”
He replied, “What are you saying?”
I explained to him that when we are in the blessed company of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and he reminds us of Jannah and the Fire of hell, it is as if we seeing it with our own eyes. However, when we leave the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, then we become busy with our wives, our children and our property and forget all these things.
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I swear by Allah, this is exactly what happens to me.”
The both off us then walked till we appeared in front of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. I then said to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, “O Prophet of Allah! Hanzalah has become a Munafiq!”
The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – asked the reason for this. I replied, “O Prophet of Allah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, when we are in your blessed company, you remind us of Jannah and Hell and it is as if we are looking at them. But when we leave your blessed company, we become busy with our wives, our children and property and forget all of these things.”
The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him –replied, “I swear by that Divine Being in Whose Divine Power is my life. If you remain in this state all the time in which you are with me and remain in Dhikr, then the Angels will even shake your hands while you are on your bed and even on the road. However, O Hanzalah! There is a time to remember and a time (when you are oblivious).” (Sahih Muslim)
