Hadrat Hasan – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that once Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – saw a bird on a tree and he said, “How much of goodness for you that the bird sits on a tree and eats the fruit and if only I was a fruit which a bird could eat.” (Kitab Az Zuhd, Ibn Mubaarak)

 

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Aamir – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – used to pick up a twig from the ground and say, “If only I was this twig. If only I was nothing and if only was not born.” (Kitaab Az Zuhd)

 

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Darda – may Allah be pleased with him – used to say, “It is my wish that I am a simple goat at home and when a guest arrives at home, I am slaughtered and the people of house cook.” (Kitaaz Az Zuhd)

 

Hadrat Sayyiduna Umar bin Husain – may Allah be pleased with him – used to say, “I wish that I was a blade of grass and a strong wind would blow me away.” (Zitaab Az Zuhd)

 

Hadrat Sayyidah Ayesha – may Allah be pleased with her – used to also say that if she was only a tree which people would cut.

 

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “A person who weeps in fear of Allah, will not enter Hell until milk does not re-enter the breast (which is impossible). And the sand and dust from the path of Allah cannot be combined with the smoke of Hell.” (Tirmidhi Shareef, Haakim)

 

It is mentioned that when the great Saint, Hadrat Sayyiduna Fudail bin Ayyaz – may Allah be pleased with him – used to read the following verse of the Qur’an in Salaah both him and his son used to weep so much that at times they feel unconscious. (Sayr ‘Alaamul Nublah)

 

It is the 30 to 36 verses of Surah Al Haqqah (69) which is:

 

خُذُوۡہُ فَغُلُّوۡہُ ﴿ۙ۳۰﴾ ثُمَّ الْجَحِیۡمَ صَلُّوۡہُ ﴿ۙ۳۱﴾ ثُمَّ فِیۡ سِلْسِلَۃٍ ذَرْعُہَا سَبْعُوۡنَ ذِرَاعًا فَاسْلُکُوۡہُ ﴿ؕ۳۲﴾ اِنَّہٗ کَانَ لَا یُؤْمِنُ بِاللہِ الْعَظِیۡمِ ﴿ۙ۳۳﴾ وَ لَا یَحُضُّ عَلٰی طَعَامِ الْمِسْکِیۡنِ ﴿ؕ۳۴﴾ فَلَیۡسَ لَہُ الْیَوْمَ ہٰہُنَا حَمِیۡمٌ ﴿ۙ۳۵﴾ وَّ لَا طَعَامٌ اِلَّا مِنْ غِسْلِیۡنٍ ﴿ۙ۳۶﴾

It will be said, “Seize him, and shackle him. Then hurl him into the blazing fire. Then bind him inside a chain which is seventy arm -lengths. Indeed he refused to accept faith in Allah, the Greatest. And did not urge to feed the needy. So he does not have any friend here this day. Nor any food except the pus discharged from the people of Hell.”

 

It is mentioned that one night, Hadrat Sayyiduna Umar bin Abdul Aziz – may Allah be pleased with him – read the 71/72th verse of Surah Ghaafir and he spent the entire night reciting this verse. (Hulyatul Awliyah; Ihya)
