Download PDF: [S] The Holy Prophet Revealed his Secret
It is mentioned that once in front of the Ka’ba there were two people who were sitting and talking very privately and so silently that no one could hear their conversation. Their nefarious plot was to assassinate Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – while he was unaware.
Among the people who were killed in the Battle of Badr was Ummayah bin Khalf. He was also the former master of Hadrat Sayyiduna Bilal – may Allah be pleased with him. The son of this person, named Safwaan, was als plotting the murder of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – jointly with a person named Umair bin Wahb whose son had been captured in the Battle of Badr.
Certainly, this was not a battle which was to be easily forgotten. Safwaan was telling this person who was also his cousin that he could never forget what happened to his father in the Battle of Badr and that after his death life had lost all taste and joy. Umair mentioned that if he did not have debts and children to take care of he would go right away to Madina Shareef and murder Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.
Safwan then asked him whether he was serious and he mentioned that he was dead serious.
Safwan mentioned that he should not bother about both of these things as he would take care of them on condition that he fulfilled his promise of killing Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.
They then promised that they could keep this secret to themselves and never reveal it to anyone. In fact, they also shook hands on this pact and oath. Umair said that since his son was a prisoner of the Muslims, this would be a perfect reason for him entering Madina Shareef.
Safwan then went home and prepared a special sword which he laced with a dangerous and toxic poison. He made a promise that his father would be avenged with this special sword of his. He then handed the dangerous sword to Umair and instructed him to go as a quickly as possible to Madina Shareef.
In that time, the news of what happened in the Battle of Badr was on the lips of everyone. However, Safwan was assuring everyone in Mecca Shareef that very soon, extremely good news would be coming to them without revealing what he and Umair had planned in secret. As a matter of fact, at that time, due to his immense evil and mischief, Umair was actually given the title of “Shaytaan-e-Quraish.” He was also at the forefront of persecuting the Muslims when they were in Mecca Shareef. During the Battle of Badr, his son was captured by an Ansaari.
When Safwan reached in Madina Shareef, he stopped his camel in front of the blessed Masjid and entered the Masjid. At that time, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – was sitting with a few other companions and they were discussing what had happened in the Battle of Badr. They were also mentioning how Allah Almighty had given victory and respect to the Muslims while the disbelievers had been terribly humiliated.
Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then noticed Umair entering the Masjid and also noticed the sword which he had hidden under his clothing. When he saw that this person was approaching Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – he felt a sense of fear that maybe the person had come with an evil intent. After all, this was also one of the people who had encouraged the disbelievers to fight against the Muslims on the occasion of Badr. He was also the one who had revealed the true numbers of the Muslim army to the disbelievers.
Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then grabbed the sword from around his neck and tore it from its strap. He presented this person in the blessed presence of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. He also revealed to Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – that this person had entered the Masjid with a sword.
Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – instructed Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – to leave him alone and allow him to come forward. Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then ordered the other blessed Ashaab to keep an eye on this person as he was considered a dangerous enemy of Islam and the Muslims. However, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – called Umair nearer to him.
When he sat in front of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – he greeted Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – with the greeting which the Kufaar used to greet each other. However, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – mentioned to him that the Muslims had been blessed with a better greeting.
Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then asked him the reason for coming to Madina Shareef. He replied that he had come to see his son who had been captured by the Muslims. He also asked Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – to kindly release his son.
Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – asked him the reason why he had entered the Masjid with a sword. He then cursed the sword and mentioned that it had brought him nothing but pain. However, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – asked him, “Tell me the truth, did you come only for the purpose of visiting your son or did you have any other purpose?”
Again he mentioned that he had only come to visit his son and for no other purpose.
Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – asked him, “Is it not true that you and Safwan sat in front of the Hatim of the Ka’ba and were once speaking about what had happened to your dead comrades in Badr? At that time, you had also mentioned that if you did not have debts to settle and children to take off, you will go immediately to Madina and kill Muhammad.”
When Umair heard this revelation, he immediately recited the Kalimah. He then declared, “O Prophet of Allah, whenever you used to deliver Divine Revelation to us, we used to belie it. However, this which you have revealed to me now is so secret that no one besides me and Safwan knew about it. I also swear that certainly this has been revealed to you by Your Divine Creator. I also give thanks to Allah Almighty that He has blessed me with the gift of Islam.”
Allamah ibn Atheer mentions that after he had accepted Islam, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – is reported to have mentioned, “I swear by Allah that prior to him accepting Islam, Umair was more disliked by me than a pig but when he accepted Islam, he has become more beloved to me than my own children.”
From this, we can also understand the immense mercy of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – that in spite of this immense danger he still pardoned the person. He also commanded the other blessed Ashaab to teach Umair the Qur’an and also to free his son. He also asked permission to go back to Mecca Shareef so that he could spread the religion of Islam.
On the other side, Safwan was waiting for some news and also waited on the route from Madina Shareef to hear any latest news about Umair. However, one day, someone informed him that Umair has actually accepted Islam. He then swore that he would never speak to Umair again. (Taarikh ibn Atheer. Al Bidaayah)
