Hadrat Sayyiduna Saalim bin Abdullah – may Allah be pleased with him – titles were “Abu Umar” or “Abu Abdullah.” He was the blessed grandson of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – and the son of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar Umar – may Allah be pleased with him. He is also considered as being among the seven famous jurist of Madina Shareef.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Saalim bin Abdullah – may Allah be pleased with him – had learnt ahadith from his father Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar – may Allah be pleased with him, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Raaf’e – may Allah be pleased with him, etc. He was also considered as one of their favourite students.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Saalim bin Abdullah – may Allah be pleased with him – himself had famous students also. They include such luminaries as Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Zuhri, Imam Abu bin Saalim, Imam Saaleh bin Kaysaan, Imam Amar bin Dinaar Basri, etc. – may Allah be pleased with them –  them among others.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Musayyib – may Allah be pleased with him – used to mention that among all the sons, he was the one who resembled his father the most in appearance and character.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Malik – may Allah be pleased with him – had stated that he was among the most pious and among the Aabideen of his era. He was unmatched in this regard. His entire life, he used to go and buy goods from the market place and never used to make use of a servant or slave.

Another important historical fact which should be noted is that the majority of people in Madina Shareef used to frown on those children that were born from females who were formerly slaves. However, such is the Divine Greatness of Allah, that He make even the insignificant look great and respected.

It is mentioned that when the three daughters of the king of Persia were captured and sold in Madina Shareef as slaves they were purchased by Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him. He gave one of the sisters to Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – as a gift. The other he gave to his son, Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Husain – may Allah be pleased with him, and one he gave to Hadrat Sayyiduna Mohammed bin Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him. In another words, all of them were married to these eminent Muslims.

The wife of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – gave birth to Hadrat Sayyiduna Saalim – may Allah be pleased with him. The wife of Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Husain – may Allah be pleased with him – gave birth to Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Zainul Aabideen – may Allah be pleased with him – and the wife of Hadrat Sayyiduna Mohammed bin Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – gave birth to Hadrat Qasim bin Mohammed – may Allah be pleased with him. In fact, the three of them, became some of the most eminent Awliyah and scholars in Madina Shareef.

Obviously, after this, the people of Madina Shareef changed their opinion about these children that were born from once female slaves. Abu Na’eem mentions that Hadrat Sayyiduna Saalim bin Abdullah – may Allah be pleased with him – passed away in the month of Zil Qada 106 A.H. (At Tahzeeb).
