Download PDF: [S] Helping his Jewish Neighbour

It is reported that once Hadrat Sayyiduna Bayazid Bustami – may Allah be pleased with him – had a neighbour who was a Jew. This person then went on a journey and his wife was also pregnant. During the period this person was not at home and his wife gave birth. They were so poor that there was no oil in the house to burn the lantern and because of this, the little baby also used to cry because of the dark.

When Hadrat Sayyiduna Bayazid Bustami – may Allah be pleased with him – heard about this, he used to buy some oil every day and give these people to light their lantern. When the Jew returned from his long journey, his wife informed him about the kindness of this eminent saint. He was extremely ashamed and presented himself in the blessed court of Hadrat Sayyiduna Bayazid Bustami – may Allah be pleased with him.

He also mentioned the great kindness displayed by Hadrat Sayyiduna Bayazid Bustami – may Allah be pleased with him – to which the great Saint replied, “This was the right of a neighbour and certainly this is a very important right. I have done no favour to you. Our religion has also taught us this important lesson. Our religion has also emphasised upon us the right of one’s neighbours.”

When the Jew heard this reply, he declared, “When your religion also teaches people to be kind to others who do not even belong to their religion, then I also wish to adopt such a religion myself.”

He then asked Hadrat Sayyiduna Bayazid Bustami – may Allah be pleased with him – to place his hand in front and he then accepted Islam.

In other words, Hadrat Sayyiduna Bayazid Bustami – may Allah be pleased with him – merely brightened the house of these people but in reality, he was actually brightening the heart of this person with the Nur of Imaan. (Tadkiratul Awliyah)
