In the Musnad of Imam Ahmed – may Allah be pleased with him – it is mentioned that once a certain companion was travelling with Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – when his animal slipped. He then shouted out, “May Satan be cursed”.

 

When Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – heard this, he replied, “Do not say this because if you say this then the Satan will think that he was one who made you slip through his power. However, if you recite ‘Bismillah’, then he will feel small and disgraced like a mosquito.”

 

Ibn Marduyah – may Allah be pleased with him – has also recorded this in his Tafseer.

 

It is mentioned that the name of the blessed companion was Hadrat Sayyiduna Usaamah bin Umair – may Allah be pleased with him. In this, it is also written that when a person says the “Bismillah”, then the Satan becomes disgraced. This is the reason that it is considered as Mustahab to read the “Bismillah”. (Abu Daud, Nisaa’i)
