Download PDF: [S] His Marriage to a Saint’s Daughter
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Wadaa’a – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates:
I used to be punctual in the gathering of the eminent Saint, Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Musayyib – may Allah be pleased with him.
However, I was absent for a few days and when I appeared in front of the eminent Saint, he asked me where I was. I replied that my wife had passed away and hence, I would not be present as I had to take care of a few issues.
When he heard this, he asked, “Why did you not inform me so that I could also take part in the Janazah Salaah?”
I remained silent.
After the lesson, as I decided to leave, he asked me, “Would you like to remarry?”
I replied, “Hadrat I am extremely poor and I only have a few Dirhams in my possession and who would actually allow his daughter to marry someone like me.”
He then mentioned that he would arrange my marriage and again I asked him and again he mentioned the same thing.
He then recited the Khutbah and recited Durood and Salaam upon Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and performed my marriage to his daughter.
After this, I returned home and I was extremely overjoyed. In fact, I could not think what to do and was thinking who I should approach for a small loan. In this confusion, I performed the Maghrib Salaah in the Masjid and went home. I was alone in the house and I placed some dry bread and olive oil on the eating cloth and decided to eat a little. Suddenly, I heard a knock on the front door and when I asked who it was, the answer came that it was Sa’eed. I realised that this was none other than Hadrat Sayyiduna Saeed bin Musayyib – may Allah be pleased with him. He then entered my small room and I mentioned that he had certainly inconvenienced himself and if he had called, I would have visited him instead. However, he replied that I was more entitled that he should visit me.
I then asked him what was his command and he stated, “You are not someone who is unmarried. Your marriage has been performed and I do like the idea that after being married, you should remain alone.”
He then moved to one side and I noticed that his daughter was standing behind him. He then held the hand of his daughter and allowed her to enter my room and he mentioned that from today, this was my wife. After saying this, he left the house.
When I was certain that he had left, I entered the room in great shyness and quickly kept the dry bread and olive oil away so that no one noticed it. I then climbed on the roof and started to call my neighbours. A few minutes later all of them had gathered and asked me what was the problem. I declared to them, “Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Musayyib – may Allah be pleased with him – has given me his daughter in marriage and he has left his daughter in my house. I also mentioned that if they were in doubt they could see for themselves.”
All of them were shocked that I had actually become the husband to the daughter of one of the greatest personalities in Islam. My mother was also informed about this and she came rushing. She also warned me not to touch the bride and that she would prepare my bride for the next three days.
I then waited for my new bride for three days and on the fourth day when I saw her, I was shocked at her beauty and amazing qualities. She was a master Hafiz of the Qur’an and fulfilled all the various Sunnah of Islam and followed the law of Shari’ah completely. We then spent one month as husband and wife. The great Saint did not visit me and neither did I visit him.
Finally, I decided to visit his classes and he was sitting with many people around him. I greeted him and he returned the greeting. He did not speak until everyone had left. When the room was empty, he asked me about my new wife and I replied that only a silly and stupid person would not like a wife of this quality and stature.
He also mentioned that if she troubled me, I should be severe on her. Just before I could return home, he handed me a pouch of twenty thousand Dirhams which I took with me.
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salman – may Allah be pleased with him – explains that this was the same daughter of Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Musayyib – may Allah be pleased with him – who Khalifah Abdul Malik bin Marwan had asked for his son Waleed. However, the great Saint refused to accept this proposal. Abdul Malik bin Marwan tried many devious methods to try and convince Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Musayyib – may Allah be pleased with him – to change his mind but the great Saint remained steadfast in his decision.
When he realized that Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Musayyib – may Allah be pleased with him – was not prepared to change his mind, he then resorted to oppressive methods and actually had the great Saint whipped a hundred times. Once, a woollen blanket was thrown over Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Musayyib – may Allah be pleased with him – and ice cold water was thrown over him but the great Saint did not change his mind. (Uyunul Hikaayah)
There is no doubt that this is the reason that these Musims of the past were not eminent Muslims, but were actually great Muslims. Every action of theirs was based on the effect which would be felt in the Hereafter. In today’s time, the parents would first see whether the boy has a business, how many cars he has or which is the latest vehicle the boy drives. The parents of the boy will first see whether the girl’s people are rich or poor. If they are rich, they will encourage their son to take out maximum benefit. Nothing is based on Islamic values and ideals which is why after a few years, the husband leaves the girl or vice versa because they feel they did not get a “good deal”.
