There are many occasions when the Muslims fought against the Romans who wanted to destroy the religion of Islam.

 

This incident occurred in that era when Islam was spreading all over as fast as possible.

 

Among the Muslims, there was also a soldier named Abdat bin Abdur Raheem. He was one of those people who had memorised the Qur’an and used to read the Qur’an in a beautiful voice. Once, the Muslims had besieged a certain Roman city and Abdat bin Abdur Raheem was also among the Muslims. While this was going on, Abdat bin Abdur Raheem happened to see a beautiful female from the opposite side and he became infatuated with this female. Instead of worrying about his duties and responsibilities towards the Muslims, he began to run after this female.

 

When Abdat bin Abdur Raheem sent a message to this female secretly, she replied that she was prepared to accept him on condition that he changed his religion. She also informed him that he could jump over the wall and that they would lower him on the other side. When the Muslims heard about this tragedy, they asked him what had happened to his Jihad, his Qur’an, his Salaah and his various other Islamic actions. He replied, “Listen! I have completely forgotten the Qur’an. All this time, I have been involved in enjoyment and pleasure. The only verse of the Qur’an which I still remember is the 2nd and 3rd verse of Surah Hajr (15), which is:

 

رُبَمَا یَوَدُّ الَّذِیۡنَ کَفَرُوۡا لَوْکَانُوۡا مُسْلِمِیۡنَ ﴿۲﴾

ذَرْہُمْ یَاۡکُلُوۡا وَیَتَمَتَّعُوۡا وَیُلْہِہِمُ الۡاَمَلُ فَسَوْفَ یَعْلَمُوۡنَ ﴿۳﴾

 

“The disbelievers will ardently wish that if only they had been Muslims!  Leave them to eat and enjoy, and for aspiration to involve them in play –  so they will shortly come to know.”
