Once, someone appeared in front of the eminent Saint, Hadrat Sayyiduna Hasan Basri – may Allah be pleased with him – and complained about drought which was affecting his area. He mentioned to the person that he should make Istighfaar, (in other words, he should make Tawbah for his sins and transgressions).

 

Another person appeared and complained about poverty and Hadrat Sayyiduna Hasan Basri – may Allah be pleased with him – also said to this person that he should Istighfaar.

 

A third person appeared and informed him that his orchards had become dry (in other words, there were no more fruits or vegetables which appeared on his farm). Hadrat Sayyiduna Hasan Basri – may Allah be pleased with him – said that this person should make Istighfaar.

 

A fourth person appeared and asked to be blessed with a good child and he also mentioned to this person that he should make Istighfaar.

 

The people asked him that four people had appeared with four different needs and Hadrat Sayyiduna Hasan Basri – may Allah be pleased with him – had mentioned the same thing to all of them. However, the great Saint replied that this was not something which he had personally made up but it was something which had been mentioned in Surah Maidah in the Qur’an. In this verse of the Qur’an, these four things are mentioned and also the fact that one should seek much Istighfaar. Through the Istighfaar, all four things were achieved.

 

Imam Qurtabi – may Allah be pleased with him – through Imam Shu’ba – may Allah be pleased with him – also mentions that once, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – went outside the city to make Du’a for rain. However, instead of reading the Salaatul Istisqah, he made plenty of Istighfaar and returned. At the same time, it rained instantly. When people asked him about this, he replied that he had mentioned the verse of the Qur’an where one makes Istighfaar and had also asked for rain to appear. (Tafseer Qurtabi)
