The blessed maternal uncle of Hadrat Sayyiduna Junaid Baghdadi – may Allah be pleased with him, namely Hadrat Sayyiduna Sirri Saqti – may Allah be pleased with him, was extremely well- known for his immense love and concern for people.
The following incident is recorded by Hafiz Abu Naeem in the “Hulyatul Awliyah”.
Ahmed bin ‘Umar Khalaqani narrates:
Once, on the day of Eid, Hadrat Sayyiduna Sirri Saqti – may Allah be pleased with him – left my Masjid. On the road, he met an extremely pious and eminent individual. He greeted this person but his greeting was also short and precise without any extra words. In other words, words such as “wa rahmatullah wa barakaatuhu” etc. were not even mentioned by him in this greeting. He did not even mention these words and did not even meet the person in the usual lengthy manner that people normally do.
I then asked him, “Hadrat! Did you not recognize that person? He is certainly a very pious person and also someone with an immense stature.”
He replied, “I know him very well and also fully recognized him.”
I then asked him why he had made his Salaam and his greeting to this person so short.
He replied, “The reason is that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him –has stated that when two Muslims meet and shake hands, then there are one hundred rewards which descends from Allah Almighty upon the both and of this, ninety reward descends upon that person who welcomes someone more warmly and (the reason that I made my greeting as short as possible) was because I wished that more Divine Mercy falls upon that person.” (Abu Naeem Isfahani. Hulyatul Awliyah)
