Hadrat Sayyiduna Talha bin Ubaidullah bin Uthman bin Amar Tameemi – may Allah be pleased with him – was among those ten blessed companions who were informed about entering Jannah in this world. He is considered as among the early Muslims and was one of those five people who entered Islam through the effort of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him. He was also among the six Muslims who were part of the Shurah or Mutual Consultative Assembly.

It is mentioned that they were both tied together by Nufal bin Khuwailid who was known as the lion of the Quraish. Since this person was highly feared, the Banu Tameem did not say anything. This is the reason that both these blessed companions are known as “companions in jail”. A few days later, they were freed.

It is mentioned that when the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – was on Hijrah, he met Hadrat Sayyiduna Talha bin Ubaidullah – may Allah be pleased with him –  on the way who was returning from Syria with a trade caravan. He then gave the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – special shawls which he had brought with him.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Talha bin Ubaidullah – may Allah be pleased with him –  also informed the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – that the people in Madina Shareef were waiting expectantly for him. The blessed companion then returned to Mecca Shareef and quickly completed his duties and travelled to Madina Shareef.

There is no doubt that there was always immense Barakah in the trade caravans of Hadrat Sayyiduna Talha bin Ubaidullah – may Allah be pleased with him. Huge amounts of grains and other food used to be bought and sold and immense wealth was achieved in this manner. In the same manner, he was also noted for his immense kindness and generosity. These attributes of the blessed companion were also acknowledged by the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.

Once, Hadrat Sayyiduna Talha bin Ubaidullah – may Allah be pleased with him – had sold a piece of land for seven hundred thousand Dirhams and instead of keeping the money with him he called his servant and told him to go around Madina Shareef and look for the needy and poor and give them this money. It is mentioned that before the next day, all of this money was distributed.

At the same time, his immense bravery was also seen in the Battle of ‘Uhud when the blessed teeth of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – were martyred. Hadrat Sayyiduna Talha bin Ubaidullah – may Allah be pleased with him – was one of those who carried the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – to a safe spot and continued to fight against those that came against the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. He was also seriously injured in this duty but did not waver one bit. When the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – saw his state, he declared, “Talha has made Jannah Waajib upon himself.” (Tirmidhi Shareef)

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has also stated that, “He who wishes to see a walking martyr should look at Talha bin Ubaidullah.” (Tirmidhi Shareef). (Tabqaat ibn Sa’ad, Usdul Ghaabah etc)
