There is no doubt that Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Masud Radi Allahu ‘Anhu is considered as one of the most eminent of companions and he was certainly very close to Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam.
During the time in Makkah Shareef, he was the first person among the companions to have the opportunity of reading the Qur’an in a loud voice. During his entire life, he was considered as a special servant, a close companion and a person who knew many secrets which were revealed to him by Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam. The blessed pillow and the blessed Na’lain of the Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam was always in his possession and control. He also passed away in the 32nd year of Hijrah.
Once people asked Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Masud Radi Allahu ‘Anhu whether he had any complaints. He replied that the only complaint he had was about his sins. These were the words he uttered in his last few days on this earth when he was very ill. He was also visited by Hadrat Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani Radi Allahu ‘Anhu. He was asked what he wished for. Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Masud Radi Allahu ‘Anhu he replied that he only wanted the Divine Mercy of Allah azza wajal. He was then asked whether a doctor should be called. He replied that the One Who has given me this test, is the Best of those who cure. When Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Masud Radi Allahu ‘Anhu was asked whether any gift should be given to him, he replied that he had no need for anything. Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Masud Radi Allahu ‘Anhu was then told that if accepted these gifts, it would be able to help his sons.
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Masud Radi Allahu ‘Anhu replied, “Why should you concern yourself about the poverty of my sons? I had commanded my sons to read Surah Waqia every night. I also heard Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam declare that, ‘he who reads Surah Waqia every night, he will never suffer from poverty (or destitution).’”
(This Hadith Shareef has also been recorded by Imam Jalaaludeen Suyutwi Radi Allahu ‘Anhu in his “Jamia Sagheer,” #7942 also from Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Masud Radi Allahu ‘Anhu. Ibn Atheer in the “Jamia Al Usul”, #6257 also from Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Masud Radi Allahu ‘Anhu. In this, the extra part is that in those Surahs which begin with “Sabhi Allah”, there is a verse which is equal in status to a thousand verses. Imam Tirmidhi Radi Allahu ‘Anhu has stated that this Hadith Shareef is Hasan Ghareeb).
When he passed away, he made his executor Hadrat Zubair bin Awwam Radi Allahu ‘Anhu. For two years, this eminent companion did not take anything from the Baitul Maal. However, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani Radi Allahu ‘Anhu then handed this portion to Hadrat Zubair Radi Allahu ‘Anhu who handed it over to the sons of Hadrat Abdullah ibn Masud Radi Allahu ‘Anhu. (Usdul Ghabah)
This was that sincere heart which created revolutions in the hearts of others. He also displayed absolute trust in the Allah azza wajal. Even when he was ill, he did not even ask whether the doctor had come yet or not! He did not even show the least amount of concern for his children because he had absolute certainty that if his children followed the advice of the Qur’an they would be cared for. Due to this this certainty, these individuals met their Creator in peace and tranquillity.
