During the Battle of Khandaq, a famous person whose name was Naeem bin Mas’ud accepted Islam. He presented his services to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. At that time, no one was aware of him being a Muslim. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then told to him that the only thing he can do alone is to create disunity among the Kaafirs.

This person then rushed towards the Bani Qurayzah. He also had an old connection with these people. When he went to them, he said, “You people have not done well by siding with the Quraish and the Bani Ghatfaan. These people have come from the outside and after the battle, they will leave but your families would continue to remain in Madina Shareef. After that, it will be between you and the Muslims. They will then extract revenge from you people as they wish.”

When they heard this, they realised that they had made a mistake and asked him what they should do about it.

He told them that, “As long as the Quraish do not give you some men as guarantor, till time, you should not take part in this battle.”

The agreed to this condition. After that he approached the Quraish and he also had some connection with them. He told them, “The Jews are now regretting why they had sided with you against the Muslims. Now, they have decided that they will ask you for a few men as guarantor but they will hand over these men to the Muslims. After this, they will create peace between themselves and the Muslims. Therefore, if they ask you for any men, do not give it to them.”

Since the Bani Ghatfaan was his tribe, he mentioned the same thing to them as well.

The next day, the Quraish sent a private message to the Jews that the horses were becoming restless and hungry and they themselves were running out of patience, therefore, the Jews should attack from inside and they will attack from the outside. This was also on the night of Friday. The next day, was obviously Saturday and this is considered as their holy day in which they do not take part in any fighting. They refused to accept the request of the Quraish and mentioned that as long as the Quraish do not give them a few men as guarantees, they will not fight.

When this was brought to the attention of the Quraish and the Bani Ghatfaan, they realised that what Na’eem had mentioned was correct. They then refused to hand over any of their men to the Jews. In this manner, there was a great amount of animosity and distrust among both parties and the battle never took place.

At the same time, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – also made Du’a for the defeat of these people. At the same time, there was a severe storm and most of the tents of the non-Muslims were blown away. This created even more panic among them besides the distrust they had for each other.

After this battle, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – also declared News of the Unseen to the Muslims that after this the disbelievers will never be able to attack the Muslims but it will be the Muslims who will attack the non-Muslims. (ibn Hishaam, Al Bidaayah, etc.)
