Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “When Allah Almighty begins to love a certain slave, He then calls Jibra’eel Ameen – peace be upon him.”

In another narration, it is mentioned that He commands Jibra’eel Ameen – peace be upon him, “Announce to those in the heavens and on earth that Allah Almighty loves a certain slave, therefore, you should also love that person.”

This Divine Love is then sent to the earth and it falls on the water and everyone drinks from this water whether they are good or bad. Consequentially, they also begin to love this person. However, when Allah Almighty dislikes a person, He commands the complete opposite to Jibra’eel Ameen – peace be upon him. Consequently, everyone dislikes that person irrespective of whether they are good or bad.” (Sahih Bukhari Shareef, #7485; Sahih Muslim Shareef, #2637)

Pertaining to the above mentioned Hadith Shareef, there is a story alluded to Hadrat Sayyiduna Thabit Banaani – may Allah be pleased with him. It is recorded that he once approached a certain Muslim leader. The Muslim leader asked him, “What Du’a does your friend Sayyiduna Saleh Yamaani recites?”

He replied, “He recites, ‘O Allah! Please place love for me in the hearts of Your servants.”

The leader thought very lightly about this and said, “Is this (only) his Du’a?”

Hadrat Thabit – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “Do you think lightly of this? I heard Hadrat Sayyiduna Anas – may Allah be pleased with him – declare that, ‘I heard the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – state that, ‘When Allah Almighty begins to love a certain slave, He announces to Jibra’eel Ameen – peace be upon him – that He loves a certain slave, therefore, you should also love that person.’” He then narrated the complete Hadith Shareef. (Sahih Bukhari Shareef, #204, pg. 510)

After listening to this Hadith Shareef, the Khalifah replied, “I seek for forgiveness in the Divine Court of Allah Almighty and I turn towards Him.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Thabit – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates, “The next day when I presented myself in the court of Hadrat Sayyiduna Saleh Yamaani – may Allah be pleased with him – he stood up and after embracing me, he kissed me on the forehead and then said, ‘May Allah Almighty keep you happy as you have made me happy. Last night, I saw that I was in Masjidun Nabawi and was present in the blessed court of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. He was saying, ‘Remain steadfast on this Du’a which you read because the friends of Allah Almighty (the Awliyah) only like a person when the Allah Almighty Himself likes that person. I then greeted the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and returned.’”

This is strange!

It is reported that Hadrat Sayyiduna Bayazid Bustami – may Allah be pleased with him – used to make Du’a in the following manner, “O Allah! It is not surprising that I love You. The reason is because I am Your simple slave. What is surprising though is that if You love me even though You are the Owner of everything and the One Who has power of all things.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Yahya bin Ma’az Raazi – may Allah be pleased with him – used to make Du’a in the following manner, “O Allah! It is not surprising that a simple slave should love his Creator, however what is surprising is that the Divine Creator should love His simple slave.”

Some Awliyah state that, “Love is a seed which is planted in the fields of people. It is nourished with the water of intelligence. Thereafter, it bears fruit according to the purity of the water and the cleanliness of the earth. Allah Almighty declares in Surah Al Araaf (8), verse 58:

وَالْبَلَدُ الطَّیِّبُ یَخْرُجُ نَبَاتُہٗ بِاِذْنِ رَبِّہٖۚ وَالَّذِیۡ خَبُثَ لَایَخْرُجُ اِلَّا نَکِدًا ؕ کَذٰلِکَ نُصَرِّفُ الۡاٰیٰتِ لِقَوْمٍ یَّشْکُرُوۡنَ ﴿۵۸﴾٪

“And the land, which is good, its vegetation comes forth with the command of Allah

and from that which is bad comes forth nothing but very little. Thus we explain signs

variedly for those who are grateful.”

The status of loving each other for the sake of Allah Almighty

Hadrat Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Three qualities which if they are found in a person, he will taste the sweetness of Imaan. The first is that he loves Allah Almighty and His Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – more than anything else. Secondly, if he loves someone, he loves him for the sake of Allah Almighty. Thirdly, after bringing Imaan on Islam, he dislikes going back to Kufr as much as he dislikes being thrown into Fire.” (Sahih Muslim Shareef, #165, pg. 687)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “On the Day of Judgement, the Allah Almighty will declare, ‘Where are those slaves of Mine who used to love each other for My Sake. Today, I will honour them with My Divine Shadow of Mercy. Today is that day on which there is no shadow except (My Divine Shadow of Mercy). (Sahih Muslim Shareef, #2566, pg. 1127)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’az – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Allah Almighty had declared that, ‘For those who love each other for My sake, (on the Day of Judgement) they will be on Mimbars of Nur which even the Prophets and martyrs will be surprised at.” (Jamia Tirmidi, #239, pg. 1892)
