“We have been commanded to respect our ‘Ulama in this manner.”

These are the words of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – when he met Hadrat Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit – may Allah be pleased with him.

It is mentioned that Hadrat Sayyiduna ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – showed immense respect and decorum for this eminent companion until he alighted from his donkey. However, Hadrat Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit – may Allah be pleased with him – said to him, “You should have not done this.”

A few minutes later, Hadrat Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit – may Allah be pleased with him – then called him forward and as he came forward, he grabbed his hand and kissed it. He then declared, “The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – also commanded us to display respect in this manner for the Ahle Bait.” (Al Usaabah)

The blessed companions had seen this manner displayed for the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – whereby whoever met him, used to kiss his blessed hand and he did not object to this. In this manner, the Taba’een used to display the same respect for the Ashaab and they never objected to this.

Therefore, this proves that there is no restriction in Islam to kiss the hands of the pious in Islam. At the same time, the person whose hand is been kissed should not have the intention that people should actually kiss his hand. If he has this intention, then there would be no sincerity in this action.
