In the treatise, “Mashaa riqul Anwaar”, it is mentioned that trial and punishment in the grave comes in various forms. One of the famous signs is that the face of the person is turned away from the Qiblah or the direction of the Ka’ba.

It is mentioned that one day, Sayyidah Khatijah – may Allah be pleased with her – asked Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – a question via her daughter Hadrat Sayyidah Fatimah – may Allah be pleased with her. She asked, “After I pass away, will you bury me in your turban or shawl?”

When Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – heard this question, his blessed eyes filled with tears. He told the blessed lady that even if she asked for his skin, he would be prepared to give this to her. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then asked her the reason for this question and what would be the benefit of his shawl or turban and she replied that these blessed items would save her from the punishment of the grave.

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then mentioned that he will give her these items and also asked her whether she had any other request. She said that when she his placed in her grave, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – was to also look at her state. She was scared that her face does not turn away from the Qiblah. When Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – heard these words, he began to weep again.

After he placed her in her grave, he noticed that her face was facing straight upwards instead of towards the Qiblah. He became extremely concerned by this and again turned her towards the direction of Qiblah. However, again he noticed that she was facing straight. This occurred on three occasions. Finally, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – heard a Voice say to him, “O my beloved! I do not wish that the face of your wife be smeared with dust and sand. Therefore, leave her in this state so that she can rest peacefully.” When Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – heard this, he was obviously overjoyed and happy. Sayyidah Asma binte Umais – may Allah be pleased with her – narrates that when Hadrat Sayyiduna Jafer Tayyar – may Allah be pleased with him – and his companions had been martyred, at that moment, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – visited her. At that time, she was preparing some bread and had also given the children a bath and had applied oil on them.

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then said to her, “Bring me the children of Jafer.” She then took these children to Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – who began to hold them close and showed immense affection and love for them. At the same time, his eyes were also filled with tears. She then said, “O Prophet of Allah, may my parents be sacrificed for you, has any news come about Jafer?” Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied that yes, today, he had been martyred. Hadrat Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aus – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that once he noticed Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – weeping and asked him the reason for this. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “I do not fear that my Ummah will worship idols, however, I have fear that they will worship (Allah Almighty) as a mere show.” (In other words, with no real sincerity).
