These words were mentioned by Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him.

The first eminent companion under discussion is Hadrat Sayyiduna Amir bin Abdullah bin Jarrah bin Hilal Qarashi Fehri – may Allah be pleased with him. He is remembered by the name Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah – may Allah be pleased with him. He is among those blessed ten who are called the “Ash’arah Mubashirah”. He took part in all the battles including the Battles of Badr and Uhud. He took part in the second migration to Abyssinia. Pertaining to him, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “For every Ummah there is an Ameen and for this Ummah, its Ameen is Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah.” (Bukhari Shareef)

When Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah – may Allah be pleased with him – was the Governor of Syria, he was visited by Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him. When the eminent leader saw his simple life style, he remarked, “The world has certainly changed all our state. However, O Abu Ubaidah! You have been protected from this.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah – may Allah be pleased with him – passed away in the plague in the 18th year of Hijrah. His Janazah Salaah was performed by Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’az bin Jabal Khazraji – may Allah be pleased with him.

Women have given up hope of giving birth to another like him.

His full name is Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’az bin Jabal bin Amar bin Aus Ansaari Khazraji – may Allah be pleased with him – also famously known as Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’az bin Jabal Khazraji – may Allah be pleased with him. He was also among those seventy people who swore allegiance to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – in the Bayat-e-Uqbah. Besides the Battles of Badr and Uhud, he took part in all other battles with the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. When Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’az bin Jabal Khazraji – may Allah be pleased with him – accepted Islam, he was only eighteen years old. He was considered as one of the most handsome of young men among his tribe. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – also sent him as the Governor to Yemen. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – also stated, “Among the Ashaab, in matters of Halaal and Haraam, the most knowledgeable (in this regard) is Hadrat Ma’az.” (ibn Maja)

During the blessed era of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’az bin Jabal Khazraji – may Allah be pleased with him – was also one of those who recorded and gathered the Qur’an. Pertaining to his greatness, once Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – stated, “Females have given up hope of giving birth to a son like Ma’az. If Ma’az was not present, then ‘Umar would have been destroyed.”

Many incidents point to his esteem and greatness among the Ashaab. Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’az bin Jabal Khazraji – may Allah be pleased with him – also passed away in the great plague in the 18th year of Hijrah. His age was thirty seven.

Once, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar gave his servant four hundred or four thousand Dinaars and this was to be given to Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah – may Allah be pleased with him. The servant was also told to wait a while and to see what this person does with these Dinaars.

This servant then brought these Dinaars to Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah – may Allah be pleased with him – and informed him that the Ameerul Mo’mineen had given this to him and that he was free to spend it as he wished. Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah – may Allah be pleased with him – then made a special Du’a for the leader of the Muslims that Allah Almighty grace him with good health and Divine Mercy.

He called his female servant and commanded her to give a certain amount to a certain person and this continued until there was nothing left of these Dinaars. When this servant returned, he informed Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – what he had seen.

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then gave him the same amount of money to be given to Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’az bin Jabal – may Allah be pleased with him – and with the same instructions to wait a while. The same thing happened and Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’az bin Jabal – may Allah be pleased with him – continued to give these Dinaars to others instead of keeping it for himself. When there were only two Dinaars left in this bag, his wife approached him and said, “We are also poor and destitute people and you should also give us something as well.” He then handed these two Dinaars to his wife.

This servant then returned and informed Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – what he had seen. When he heard these reports, he remarked, “These are brothers, one of another.” In other words, in trying to achieve more and more reward from Allah Almighty all of them are the same.

Such was the behaviour of the blessed Ashaab that they never kept anything for themselves. Whatever, they received, they immediately gave it to someone else thinking that, that person was more entitled and needier. There are numerous examples of this in the blessed lives of the blessed companions.

He who loves for the sake of Allah.

In the Sahih Muslim Shareef there is a report which has been narrated by Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him –has stated that, “Once a person went to another village to meet his friend. At the time, Allah Almighty also placed an Angel on the road. When the person walked past, the angel asked him, “Where are you going to?” He replied, “I am going to meet a brother of mine in that village.” The Angel then asked him “Do you owe this person any favour which he has performed on you and you intend to maintain (this kindness).” The person replied, “No, the only thing is that I love this person for the sake of Allah.” The Angel then revealed, “I am a messenger from Allah to inform you that Allah Almighty Loves you in the same way as you love this brother of yours.” (Sahih Muslim Shareef)
