Hadrat Sayyiduna Yusuf bin Al Hasan – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that when he stayed a long time in the blessed company of Hadrat Sayyiduna Zun Nun Misri – may Allah be pleased with him – he decided to ask him a question. He asked him, “Hadrat! What is the first most unusual incident you have seen?”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Zun Nun Misri – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “During my younger days, I spent it mostly on sport and play. In fact, the multicolours of the world had placed a veil in front of my eyes. However, Allah Almighty blessed me with the strength of making Taubah and one day, I decided to leave everything and travel for Hajj. We travelled by boat. When I reached the shore, I noticed a boat in which there were many business people from Egypt. I also joined these people in travelling for Hajj.

“On this boat, I also noticed a very young man whose face was full of Nur and his forehead also had signs of great Ibadah. However, in the middle of the journey, the wallet of the captain had gone missing. The wallet was also filled with cash. The people searched from his wallet but it could not be found. They then decided to search everyone on the boat, but still the wallet could not be found.

“Eventually, when they realised that that they could not find the wallet, they placed the blame of the young man that he had stolen the wallet. When the young man saw this, he jumped into the water but he did not drown. In fact, the waves became like a couch for him. In fact, the young man sat on the waves just like a person would sit on his couch. All the people on the boat were looking at this young man in amazement when suddenly he made Du’a. He declared, ‘O Allah Almighty! These people have accused me of stealing. O Allah Almighty, I plead to You to command every creature in the sea to come up with jewels and precious stones in their mouth.’

The great Saint continues, “As he was saying these words, suddenly the boat was surrounded by sea creatures and in of their mouth there were so many jewels and precious stones that the sea itself became bright with their colours. Suddenly, this young man began to walk on the sea and disappeared from our vision. He was also reciting the verse of Surah Fatiha that, ‘We only worship Allah Almighty and we only Ask Him for help.’”

The great Saint admits that this was the first unusual incident he had seen on his journeys and this was one of the reasons that he decided to travel and meet the Awliyah. (Uyunul Hikaayah)

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has also stated that, “There will always be thirty people in Ummah whose hearts would be like the heart of Nabi Ebrahim – peace be upon him. When anyone of them passes away, Allah Almighty will substitute him with another (Abdaal).” (Musnad Imam Ahmed)
