Hadrat Sayyiduna Abul Abbas Sahl bin Sa’ad Saa’adi – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that once a very wealthy person walked past the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. He asked one of the companions that was sitting with him, “What is your thoughts about this person?”
The blessed companion replied, “This person is considered as among the great and very respectable people. By Allah! He is such (or has such a right) that if he sends a marriage proposal, his marriage would be performed. If he intercedes on behalf of someone, it will be accept.”
When the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – heard this, he remained silent.
Then another person walked past and he asked the same blessed companion, “What is your thoughts about this person?” The blessed companion replied, “O Prophet of Allah! He is considered as being among the poor people of the Muslims. He is such that if he sends a marriage proposal to anyone, his marriage will not be performed. If he intercedes for anyone, it will not be accepted. If he says anything, his words will not be listened to.”
The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “With Allah Almighty, this poor person is better than the rich person even more than the entire earth.” (Bukhari Shareef)
The greatness of the poor and destitute.
What is the actual scale by which this is measured? What is the instrument which determines this? What are the qualities and attributes which takes an ordinary human past the stars and even the heavens?
As a matter of fact, the actual scale and measurement is Islam. Allah Almighty has named this as Taqwah. In other words, the best person with Allah Almighty is that person who is the most pious or has the most Taqwah.
The son of Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’ad bin Abu Waqqas – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’ad – may Allah be pleased with him – had the impression once, that they were a little elevated than those who were poor and that they had a greater stature. When the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – heard about this, he declared, “You people are the Du’a of the poor and through them Allah Almighty sends Divine Help. It is through them that sustenance is sent.” (Bukhari Shareef)
The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has also stated that, “Search for me among those who are poor because it is through these people that you people are given sustenance.” (Sahih Abu Daud)
There is also a Du’a of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – which has been established through a Sahih Sanad, “O Allah! Make me and keep me among the Miskeen, give me death among the Miskeen and on the Day of Judgement, allow me to awake among the Miskeen”. (Bahiqi, Tabarani)
