Ibn Abid Dunya, through a long chain of narrators, record from Hadrat Sayyiduna Hasan – may Allah be pleased with him – that once, when Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – was very ill and in his final moments, Hadrat Sayyiduna Salman Farsi – may Allah be pleased with him – came to visit him and seek some advice.
The eminent Sahabi replied, “If the riches of the world present themselves to you, then except what is necessary for you (at that time), only take that. Also bear in mind that when a person recites the Fajr Salaah, he enters into the Divine Grace of Allah Almighty. At the same time, do not break the responsibility of Allah Almighty which is on you. If you do this, Allah Almighty will allow you to enter the Fire of Hell through your nose being pulled.” (Kanzul Ummaal, At Targheeb)
The same records from Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Zarr Ghifaari – may Allah be pleased with him – who admits that he used to sit the closest to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. He admits that once he heard the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – say that, “On the Day of Judgement, the nearest to me will be that person who leaves the world like I am leaving it. There is no doubt that except me, each of you is embroiled in something or other in this world.” (Musnad Imam Ahmed, Kanzul Ummaal)
The same records that once when Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Zarr – may Allah be pleased with him –was in Syria, Habeeb bin Salamah sent him three hundred Dinaars. He also mentioned that the eminent companion could spend it personally on himself. However, the blessed companion returned this money and said to the messenger that Allah Almighty had not made people more independent than them. (In other words, the blessed relied on no one). Bear in mind, we are speaking about the best generation in the world. We only require a small amount of shade where we can conceal ourself. We have a small herd of goats which reach in the evening and a female slave who spends her income on us as charity and more than this I have great fear for.” (A Hulyah)
The same records from Salamah bin Nabaata who reveals that once they were going for Hajj or Umrah and passed by the house of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Zarr Ghifaari – may Allah be pleased with him – and decided to visit him. He then came to visit us and we asked him how much of possessions he had. He replied, “I have so many camels and so many camels. The people who look after them is my son and my slave and he will also be freed in a years time.”
The same records from Hadrat Sayyiduna Zuhaak bin Mazaahim – may Allah be pleased with him – that once someone came to visit the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. He then asked, “O Prophet of Allah, who is the greatest Zaahid among people?”
The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “That person who does not forget the grave and the destruction within the grave; also refrains from all the extra things in the world and from the beautiful things (of this world); chooses that which will remain forever, meaning the Hereafter; he does not count tomorrow and considers himself as someone who is dead.” (Musannaf ibn Abi Shaybah, Al Ittihaaf, At Targheeb)
