Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “When a person is placed in the grave, two Angels with large dark black eyes appear in front of him. The first is Munkar and the second is Nakeer. They ask the person, ‘what did you have to say about this person.’ (in other words, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him).

If the person is believer, he answers that this person is the slave of Allah and a Messenger sent by Allah and I also bear testimony that there is none worthy of worship but Allah. When they hear this answer, the both Angels replied, ‘We knew that you would say this’.

Thereafter, the grave of the person is made expansive in all directions. They then inform him to rest, however, the deceased person informs them that he would like to return to his family to inform then what he had seen and his state.

However, the Angels inform him to sleep like how a bride sleeps and who is only pleased when her beloved awakes her. (In other words, a bride would never like anyone else to awake her because she would certainly be scared and terrified). However, if her beloved awakes her, then she does not feel in this manner. Finally, it will be Allah Almighty who will allow that person to arise.

If the person is a Munafiq, he will answer that he had heard people saying something but they could not understand the reality of it. The Angels will inform him that they knew he would answer in this fashion. They will then order the both sides of the grave to meet or the ground to meet each other. He will be squeezed to such a degree that his ribs will appear on both sides. In this way, he will continue to suffer in the grave until Allah Almighty commands him to arise (so that he can suffer even more torment in the Hereafter). (Jamia Tirmidhi Shareef)
