Hadrat Sayyiduna Akramah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates from Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him:
During the war against the Romans, a friend of the Muslims, namely Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Huzaafah Sahmi – may Allah be pleased with him – was captured. He was also a blessed companion. The commander of the Romans then called all the Muslims forward and addressing Hadrat Huzaafah – may Allah be pleased with him – he said, “Either accept Christianity, or you will be burnt alive in a pot made from copper.”
However, when the blessed companion heard this, he bravely replied, “This would never happen, I will never ever accept Christianity.”
This tyrant then ordered that a pot be placed over a fire and filled with oil till it began to boil. He then called one of the Muslims and asked him to accept Christianity. This brave Muslim refused and he was then thrown into this pot of hot oil. A few seconds later, all his flesh were burnt and only his bones appeared above the oil.
The tyrant then called Hadrat Sayyiduna Huzaafah – may Allah be pleased with him – forward and also commanded him to accept Christianity, however, the brave companion refused to do so. The Roman commanded then instructed that he be thrown into the hot pot of oil.
His captures then came forward and taking hold of him, they went towards the fire. However, at that moment, the blessed companion began to weep. These guards then approached the commander and informed him that perchance this Muslim had changed his mind because they saw him weeping. The commander then informed them to bring the prisoner to him.
The commander was also under the impression that Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Huzaafah Sahmi – may Allah be pleased with him – had changed his mind and that he had become fearful. When Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Huzaafah Sahmi – may Allah be pleased with him – appeared by the Roman commander, he bravely said to them, “Are you people under the impression that I am afraid of death and therefore I am weeping. I swear by Allah Almighty! I do not fear death. The reason that I am weeping is because I am saddened that I have only one life to give to Allah Almighty! I have only one life which I can give in the path of Islam. If only I could have a thousand lives, I would give all of them for the sake of Allah Almighty”.
When the Roman commander heard this statement, he was obviously shocked. He was surprised to see the amount of love and reverence this person had for Islam and that he was prepared to give his life for the sake of Islam. Adopting another strategy, he informed the eminent companion, “If you become a Christian, I will give the hand of my daughter to you in marriage and I will also give you a share in my government.”
When he saw that he had failed to convince Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Huzaafah Sahmi – may Allah be pleased with him, he said to him, “If you can kiss my head, then I am prepared to free you and all the other Muslim prisoners as well.”
When the eminent companion heard this, he asked, “If you promise to do this, then on that condition, I am prepared to kiss your head.”
The Roman commander assured him that he will keep to his promise. With the hope that all the other Muslims would be freed, he agreed to kiss the head of this Roman commander. The Roman commander then kept to his promise and freed all the Muslims.
When all of these Muslims finally arrived in the court of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – and when he saw Hadrat Sayyiduna Huzaafah – may Allah be pleased with him – approaching him, he immediately stood up and kissed his head and displayed his immense joy at their arrival.
