Hadrat Sayyiduna Naaf’e Taahi – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates:

One day I passed by Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Zarr – may Allah be pleased with him – who asked me, “Who are you?” I replied that I lived in Iraq.

He then asked, “Do you know Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Aamir – may Allah be pleased with him?” I replied that yes, I did know him.

He declared, “Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Aamir – may Allah be pleased with him – used to study together with me and was a very close friend of mine. However, he had sought for a government position and has become the Governor of Basrah. When you reach Basrah you must go and meet him. When he asks you whether you have any need, then you must mention to him that you need to speak to him in private. When you are alone with him, you must tell him that you have brought a message from Abu Zarr. He has conveyed his Salaam to you and inform him that until now, I still eat dates only and only drink water and that my life is fast diminishing and so is yours.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Naafe – may Allah be pleased with him – staes, “When I went in front of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Aamir – may Allah be pleased with him – he asked me whether I had any need. I mentioned to him that I needed to speak privately to him. I then said to him, ‘I have the message of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Zarr – may Allah be pleased with him.’

The moment he heard the name of the blessed companion, I could see that his body began to tremble. I then said to him, ‘He has conveyed his Salaam to you and has stated that, ‘I continue to survive by merely eating dates and drinking water and my life is fast diminishing and so is yours.’ The moment he heard these words, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Aamir – may Allah be pleased with him – covered his face with his shawl and he wept so much that his shawl became wet.” (Uyunul Hikaayah)
